Licensed electrician in North York
North York is one of the areas we work in most. We wire custom infill homes for builders, upgrade panels in post-war bungalows, install EV chargers and standby generators, and answer emergency calls day and night.
Electrical work in North York
Two kinds of house, two kinds of job
Much of North York was built in the 1950s and 60s. Many of those bungalows and two-storeys still have their original 60 or 100 amp service, and sometimes original wiring, which wasn't designed for central air, a renovated kitchen or an electric car. For these homes the job is usually a panel and service upgrade, bringing older circuits up to code, and adding capacity for an EV charger or heat pump.
At the same time, lots across Willowdale, Bayview Village, York Mills, Armour Heights and Bathurst Manor are being rebuilt as large custom homes. Those projects need a builder's electrician from temporary power to final inspection, with 200 amp or larger services, detailed lighting plans, EV-ready garages and often a standby generator. That's the work we do for general contractors.
Panel upgrades with Toronto Hydro
North York is served by Toronto Hydro. When a panel upgrade needs the service disconnected, or the service size increased, we book that with Toronto Hydro and schedule our crew around their appointment, so the power is off for as little time as possible. Whether your hydro line is overhead or underground is the biggest factor in the price, so it's one of the first things we check.
Why North York homes call us
We know the housing. Shaldin started his career at Toronto Hydro, and much of what he's worked on since has been in streets like these: post-war bungalows with original services, and the custom homes replacing them. When something goes wrong, whether a dead circuit, a burning smell at an outlet or a panel that trips after a storm, we answer 24/7 across North York.
Residential and commercial electrical contractor for North York
Most of our North York work is in houses and condo suites, but local businesses call us too. Plaza units along Yonge, Sheppard and Finch need fit-outs and new circuits whenever a tenant changes. Office and medical suites near North York Centre need work planned around their hours. See commercial electrical in North York for how those jobs run.

What each kind of North York project needs
Most North York jobs fall on one side of this line. Knowing which side you're on tells you what to plan for.
| Keeping and renovating the house | Tearing down and building new | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical service | 60 or 100 amps today, upgraded to 200 | 200 amps or more, sized from the drawings |
| First step | A site visit and a load calculation for the finished house | Temporary power for the site, then rough-in |
| Toronto Hydro | A disconnect and reconnect on upgrade day | A new service connection, planned with the builder |
| Permits | ESA permit filed by us | ESA permit filed by us, alongside the builder's City permits |
| Often added | EV charger circuit, basement suite, surge protection | Standby generator, lighting controls, EV-ready garage |

Condos and towers
North York's condo corridor
Along Yonge Street, from York Mills up through North York Centre to Finch and Steeles, thousands of people live in condo towers. Suite work is a different job from a house. The panel is small, the ceilings are concrete, and anything that touches the building's own electrical system needs the condominium corporation's say.
Inside a suite we add pot lights and lighting where the ceiling allows, add circuits for a renovated kitchen, replace tired devices and trace faults. For an EV charger in a condo garage, the first step is the board: many buildings now have a policy, and we can work with the property manager to price and plan it.
We also work for the buildings themselves, from common-area lighting to tenant suites in the plazas at their base. See commercial electrical in North York.

What customers say
Reviews from our customers
I hired Marrast Contracting for a full home electrical inspection and was extremely impressed. The inspection was completed by their Master Electrician, and they provided a detailed, formal report certified under ECRA/ESA.
Marrast Contracting did an outstanding job installing my EV outlet. Shaldin and his team delivered exactly what I wanted, with minimal touch-ups needed afterwards. The process was clear, cost-effective, and I always knew what to expect. Shaldin went above and beyond to make sure I was completely satisfied. I'll definitely be turning to them again for future projects.
Have done business with this company twice now once for a panel & subpanel replacement and most recently for a few extra circuits. They were excellent both times, on time with quality, neat & certified work. Great contractor to deal with!
Marrast Contracting was a life saver -- actually a Xmas saver! All our outdoor plugs weren't working and [Shaldin] found the reset circuit (which was hidden) that allowed us to put up lights and trees for Christmas. [Shaldin] also provided us with a quote on cleaning up our horribly organized electrical panel and he also provided his recommendation on a couple of other electrical issues. He was on time, professional, friendly, and really knew his stuff. We'd definitely contract him again.
I had a fantastic experience with Marrast Contracting. They handled all of the electrical work for both my kitchen renovation and duplex conversion, and the quality of their work was excellent.
Marrast helped us with the panel upgrade, they were professional and fast. Will hire again for sure. Thanks a lot to the team
Questions
North York electrical questions
Are you a licensed electrical company serving all of North York?
Yes. Marrast Contracting is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, licence ECRA/ESA 7016430. We work across all of North York: from the Bridle Path and York Mills in the south to Newtonbrook and the Steeles border in the north, and from Downsview in the west to Parkwoods and Victoria Village in the east.
How do I know whether my North York house has overhead or underground service?
Look at where the hydro line meets the house. If a cable runs from a pole on the street or in the back lane to a mast or bracket on your wall, it's overhead. If there's no wire and the meter is fed from below, it's underground. Many older North York streets are overhead; many newer rebuilds are underground. We confirm it on the site visit, because it changes the scope of a service upgrade.
I live in a North York condo. Can you still help?
Yes. In a condo suite we install pot lights and lighting, add circuits, replace devices and troubleshoot faults. Work that touches the building's common electrical system, such as an EV charger in the garage, needs the condominium corporation's approval first. We can work with the property manager on what the building allows.
Do you install EV chargers in North York condos?
Yes, with the condominium corporation on board. A charger in a shared garage draws on the building's electrical service, so the board and property manager approve it first. We assess the building's spare capacity, propose the circuit route and how the power is metered, then file the ESA permit. More on EV chargers in North York.
Do you take out the ESA permit?
Yes. In Ontario, the licensed contractor files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and books the inspection. We handle it on every job that needs one, and you get the ESA Certificate of Acceptance when the work passes. Keep it: insurers and home buyers often ask for it.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. For an electrical emergency call (647) 930-2907 any time, day or night. If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 911 first. If a power line is down, stay well back and call your hydro utility's emergency line.
How does a service call work?
A service or diagnostic call is a first visit to find the cause of a problem. We give you the rate when you book, test the circuit, tell you what we found, and give you the price to fix it before we do any work. Many simple jobs can also be priced from photos.
