Electrical contractor for York Mills and Hoggs Hollow homes
Large houses, ravine lots and long driveways under mature trees make electrical work here a bigger job than in most of North York. We plan services, generators and outdoor lighting for homes of this scale.
The neighbourhood
A river valley and the homes above it
Hoggs Hollow lies in the valley where Yonge Street crosses the West Don River, near York Mills Road. It takes its name from the Hogg family, who ran mills there in the 1800s. Today it's known for large homes on winding, wooded streets.
York Mills spreads out around it on higher ground. The lots are big, the trees are mature, and many houses back onto ravine. Older estate homes from the middle of the last century sit beside new custom builds that replaced their neighbours.
What that means electrically
Homes of this size draw more power and spread it over more ground. A typical rebuild here might have heated floors, a large kitchen, a home theatre, a pool and two or more cars to charge. The service has to be sized for all of it, often with more than one panel.
The land matters too. Long driveways, detached garages, pool houses and terraces mean long feeds across the lot. Ravine slopes and protected trees affect where cable can be buried. Mature trees over overhead lines bring storm outages, which is why generators come up so often.
Backup power
Choosing what the generator carries
For a large home, the first decision is how much of the house the generator should run.
| Essential circuits | Whole house | |
|---|---|---|
| What runs | Heat, sump pump, fridge, some lights and outlets, security | Everything, including air conditioning and the kitchen |
| Transfer switch | Feeds a separate panel of chosen circuits | Switches the whole service |
| Generator size | Smaller unit | Larger unit, sized from a load calculation |
| Suits | Owners who want the house safe and warm | Owners who want no change at all during an outage |
Either way, we install the transfer switch and wiring, file the ESA permit and book the inspection. More detail is on our North York backup generator page.
Outside the house
Lighting the lot, not just the house
On a big, wooded lot, outdoor lighting does real work. It lights the driveway and steps, picks out the trees and lets you see the ravine edge at night. We design layouts that light paths without spilling into the neighbours' windows.
Low-voltage landscape systems are common, with the transformer near the house and short runs to each fixture. Line-voltage work, such as gate power, pool equipment or an outdoor kitchen, needs buried feeds and weather-rated gear. See outdoor lighting in North York for what we install.
For builders on estate projects
Many York Mills and Hoggs Hollow jobs come to us through custom home builders. We provide temporary power, rough-in to the builder's schedule and final connections, with two crews to keep a large project moving. Our page for contractors sets out how we work with GCs.

Questions
York Mills and Hoggs Hollow electrical questions
We lose power when storms bring branches down. Is a standby generator worth it here?
For many York Mills and Hoggs Hollow owners it is. Streets with a heavy tree canopy tend to see outages when branches meet lines in a storm. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch starts on its own and keeps the heat, sump pump, fridge and security running.
Can you run power to a pool house or detached garage at the far end of the lot?
Yes. A long run needs the cable sized for the distance, not just the load, so voltage stays where it should. The feed is usually buried, and the outbuilding gets its own small panel. On a sloped or ravine lot we plan the trench route with you before we dig.
Do landscape lights on a ravine lot need special planning?
They do. Slopes, roots and protected areas limit where cable can go. The City has rules about work near ravines and around protected trees. We keep trenching shallow and short where we can, use fixtures rated for the conditions, and plan routes with your landscaper.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running during an outage. Some homeowners back up essentials only (furnace, sump pump, fridge, a few lights and outlets). Others want the whole house. We look at your panel and how you use power, then recommend a size and a transfer switch to match.
