Generac standby generator installation in North York
North York's wider lots and full basements make it one of the easier parts of the city to add a standby generator, and one of the places it's most useful. We size it, place it, wire the transfer switch and test it before winter.
Why North York owners add one
Basements, sump pumps and winter storms
Most North York houses have full basements, and many of them are finished: family rooms, guest rooms, offices and sometimes a rental suite. A finished basement is exactly where a power cut does the most damage, because the sump pump stops when the grid does. Heavy rain and storm outages tend to arrive together.
Winter brings the other risk. Ice storms have left parts of Toronto without power for days, and a gas furnace still needs electricity to run its fan and controls. A standby generator restarts the furnace, the sump pump, the fridge and the lights automatically, usually within seconds, whether you're home or away.
Room to work with
Compared with the old city, North York lots are generally wider and deeper, with side yards and driveways that give more choice of where the unit sits. That makes it easier to meet the clearance rules, keep the unit away from bedroom windows and stay on good terms with the neighbours. On the large lots of York Mills, the Bridle Path and Hoggs Hollow, whole-home units are common; on a typical Willowdale or Don Mills lot, an essentials setup is often the better value.

Toronto Hydro and safety
Why the transfer switch matters
A generator must never feed power back into Toronto Hydro's lines, where it can injure line crews working to restore the neighbourhood. The automatic transfer switch prevents that by disconnecting your home from the grid before the generator takes over, then switching back when utility power returns. It's also what lets the system work while you're asleep or away.
Authorized Generac dealer: install, permits and maintenance
We're an authorized Generac dealer, dealer ID 1032962. One contractor supplies the unit, sets it on its pad, wires the transfer switch, files the ESA permit and lines up the gas fitter.
Once it's running, the generator exercises itself on a schedule, so a problem tends to show up on a quiet afternoon rather than in a storm. A yearly service covers the oil, filters, battery and transfer switch, and we can put it on our calendar for you. Ask about Generac's extended manufacturer warranties when we quote.

Questions
Backup generators in North York: questions
Where can a generator go on a North York lot?
Usually beside the house or at the back, close to the gas meter and the panel. It has to meet clearance requirements from windows, doors, vents and the property line, and the manufacturer's own spacing rules. On many North York lots there's more than one spot that works, so we pick the one that's quietest for you and your neighbours and shortest to wire.
We're rebuilding. Should we plan for a generator now?
Yes, even if you install it later. A generator-ready panel, a transfer switch location and a gas stub planned during the build cost far less than retrofitting them into finished walls.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running during an outage. Some homeowners back up essentials only (furnace, sump pump, fridge, a few lights and outlets). Others want the whole house. We look at your panel and how you use power, then recommend a size and a transfer switch to match.
Is your work guaranteed?
Every job comes with our 1-year workmanship warranty. Products carry their own manufacturer warranties on top of that, and standby generators can be covered by extended manufacturer warranties.
