Electrical work in Richmond Hill
Estate homes, a historic village and new subdivisions
Richmond Hill's housing covers a wide range in a short drive. Around Mill Pond and the old village along Yonge Street, there are older homes and mid-century houses with modest services and wiring that has been updated in parts. Bayview Hill and South Richvale have large homes on generous lots, many built in the 1980s and 90s and now being renovated or rebuilt. Jefferson, Westbrook and Rouge Woods filled in during the 1990s and 2000s, and Oak Ridges has grown up on the moraine to the north.
Richmond Hill is in York Region and is supplied by Alectra Utilities. Building permits come from the City of Richmond Hill, and electrical permits come from ESA, which we file on every job that needs one.
Lighting
Lighting large rooms well
Big rooms and tall ceilings are where lighting plans go wrong most often. A grid of pot lights on its own can leave a great room flat and glary. The homes that feel best use several layers, each on its own switch or dimmer, so the room works for a family dinner, a party and a quiet evening.
On the outside, Bayview Hill and South Richvale homes often have long driveways, mature trees and large back gardens, which suit landscape and pathway lighting on outdoor-rated circuits and timers.
| Layer | What it does | Typical fixtures |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient | Lights the room evenly | Pot lights on dimmers, cove lighting |
| Task | Lights where you work | Under-cabinet lights, island pendants, vanity lights |
| Accent | Draws the eye | Art lights, wall washers, stair and niche lighting |
| Exterior | Safety and curb appeal | Facade, pathway, garden and driveway lights |
Backup power
Generators for sump pumps and wells
For many Richmond Hill homeowners, a standby generator is about water. In finished basements, the sump pump has to keep working through a storm outage. Toward the northern edge of York Region, some homes rely on a private well, and without power there's no water to the taps at all.
Both pumps are motor loads that draw a surge when they start, so they have to be counted properly when we size the generator and choose the transfer switch. The gas connection for a natural gas unit is made by a licensed gas fitter; we plan the electrical work around it.
Panel upgrades with Alectra
In older village homes, a service upgrade is often the first step before a renovation or an EV charger. When the service needs to be disconnected or enlarged, we arrange it with Alectra and book our crew for the same day.

Reviews from our customers
Marrast contracting came to do some electrical upgrades at our home. I can't say enough how professional, and knowledgeable Shaldin and his electrical apprentice are. This has been the best contracting experience I've had and have already referred them to my friends and family!!
Marrast Contracting was hired to do some electrical work in my laundry room. Shaldin is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. He found good solutions and was flexible when the original plan didn't quite work. Very happy with the result. Would hire him again.

He was totally professional, efficient and was kind enough to answer all of my questions so I could understand what he was doing. I was so pleased that I have already referred a family member who was also very pleased with the work that was done. I plan to recommend to anyone I know who needs any contracting work done!!!! Thanks

Questions
Richmond Hill electrical questions
Can a generator keep my well pump running?
Yes, if it's sized and wired for it. A well pump is a large motor load, so it has to be counted when we size the generator and choose which circuits the transfer switch carries. Homes on wells are more common at the northern edge of York Region, and keeping water flowing is often the main reason those owners add backup power.
Do you take on lighting design for large homes?
Yes. We plan lighting in layers, work from a designer's plan or help create one, and wire scenes and dimming so rooms can be used in different ways. It's easiest to do during a renovation or build, but we also add lighting to finished homes.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running during an outage. Some homeowners back up essentials only (furnace, sump pump, fridge, a few lights and outlets). Others want the whole house. We look at your panel and how you use power, then recommend a size and a transfer switch to match.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It depends on the house. The biggest factor is whether the hydro service to your house is overhead or underground, followed by where the meter and panel sit and how much wiring needs to move. The utility matters too: Toronto Hydro charges a fee for the disconnect and reconnect, which Alectra and Hydro One customers usually don't pay. Send us photos of your panel and meter for a first idea, and we give you a fixed written quote after a site visit.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. For an electrical emergency call (647) 930-2907 any time, day or night. If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 911 first. If a power line is down, stay well back and call your hydro utility's emergency line.
