Electrical work in Aurora
A village core, family subdivisions and newer streets
Aurora grew up around Yonge Street, and the old village around Yonge and Wellington is still its centre. Some houses there date from the 1800s and the early 1900s. Others were added in the decades after the war. Wiring in these homes is often a mix of original runs and later repairs.
Around that core, Aurora Heights, Aurora Highlands and Aurora Grove are family neighbourhoods. Much of their housing went up between the 1970s and the 1990s. The Hills of St. Andrew is known for estate homes on larger lots. Bayview Wellington and Bayview Northeast hold many of the town's newer houses.
Aurora is part of York Region, and Alectra Utilities supplies its power. Building permits come from the Town of Aurora. Electrical permits come from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), and we file them for every job that needs one.

Storms and basements
Keeping the sump pump running
Many Aurora houses have finished basements, and many of those rely on a sump pump. Summer thunderstorms and winter ice can both take down lines. When they do, the pump stops just as the ground is wettest. That is the most common reason Aurora owners ask us about backup generators in Aurora.
A standby unit runs on natural gas and starts on its own through an automatic transfer switch. The gas connection is made by a licensed gas fitter. We size the unit, wire the switch and handle the ESA permit.
Panels that have run out of room
In the older village homes, the first job is often a panel upgrade in Aurora. Fuses and 60 amp services still turn up. In the 1980s and 90s subdivisions, the service is usually larger, but the panel may be full. Air conditioning, a finished basement and a hot tub have filled the spaces over the years.

What customers say
Reviews from our customers
After a home inspector drew our attention to exterior lights that had been installed in the 1970s and were possibly no longer up to code, we called Marrast Contracting again to have them take a look. Again, the experience was entirely positive in every respect. We ended up having only an outlet and a new LED spotlight installed because the old wiring was still in proper order.
The team at Marrast Contracting Inc were wonderful to work with! They helped us resolve a few issues found in our housing inspection. They responded promptly to the service request, provided dates shortly after we connected and were on time, and efficient in resolving the issues we noted. They provided guidance on things that did not need to be addressed and did not overcharge us. Shaldin and Mike were great, we highly recommend them for your electrical needs!
My problem was a bit complicated so it took a couple of visits to diagnose the issue. Once that was determined, [Shaldin] and Mike got the parts and got to work. I was very pleased with the results and would not hesitate to contact them again for other issues.
We hired Marrast Contracting for an electrical panel 200A upgrade. The team led by Shaldin did an amazing job. Everything was described from start to finish. They contacted hydro for disconnection and reconnection at completion, obtained the permit and the job was finished on time. We gladly recommend Marrast Contracting.
Shaldin and his team did a fantastic job replacing my 150A breaker panel with a 200A, and installing my Tesla charger. He was responsive via phone and text during the quoting stage and negotiated fairly and in good faith. Excellent communicator! He contacted the power company and helped arrange for disconnect. He is licensed and insured and provided proof. The installation proceeded without too many hiccups, and he honoured the lump sum pricing, even though the time to complete the install exceeded the estimated time. When changes were required to the scope of work, he asked for my approval before commencing, and we agreed on a fair price for the extra work.
We are very pleased with the EV power installation at our home. The work was done in a timely and professional manner. [Shaldin] and his team provided excellent guidance regarding our best options. The friendly helpful service made it a very positive experience.
Questions
Aurora electrical questions
Who supplies power in Aurora, and does it change how you work?
Aurora is supplied by Alectra Utilities. On jobs where the power has to be cut at the meter, such as a service upgrade, we book the disconnect and reconnect with Alectra. ESA has to authorize the connection before Alectra turns the power back on.
We bought an older house near downtown Aurora. What should we check first?
Start with the panel and the wiring. Older homes near Yonge and Wellington may have a small service, fuses or wiring from several different decades. An electrical inspection tells you what you have before you plan a renovation or speak to your insurer.
Our basement flooded in a storm when the power went out. What can we do?
A sump pump only works while it has power. A standby generator with a transfer switch keeps it running through an outage. A battery backup pump is another option for shorter outages. We can look at both and tell you what suits your basement.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. For an electrical emergency call (647) 930-2907 any time, day or night. If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 911 first. If a power line is down, stay well back and call your hydro utility's emergency line.
