Electrical work in Newmarket
An old market town with newer streets around it
Newmarket's historic core is Main Street, with its storefronts and the older homes on the streets nearby. Some of those houses are more than a century old. Most have been renovated several times, so the electrical system is often a patchwork of eras behind the plaster.
Most of the town's housing went up in the second half of the twentieth century. Neighbourhoods such as Gorham-College Manor, Huron Heights, Bristol-London, Armitage, Summerhill Estates, Stonehaven and Glenway are full of bungalows, backsplits and two-storey family homes. Woodland Hill and Copper Hills are newer again, with larger houses and attached garages.
Each of those eras brings its own electrical questions. An older house may still have fuses or a 60 amp service. A 1970s or 1980s home often has a 100 amp panel with no spaces left. A newer house usually has capacity, but its owners want a generator, a charger or better lighting.

Permits and the utility
How a Newmarket job is approved and connected
Most electrical work in Ontario needs an ESA permit. For service work, the local utility is involved too.
Site visit
We look at the panel, the meter and the work you have in mind, then send a fixed, written price.
ESA notification
We file the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority before we begin.
Utility booking
If the service has to be cut, we schedule it with Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution.
Inspection
An ESA inspector reviews the work. On a service change, ESA then authorizes the reconnection.
Sign-off
You receive the Certificate of Acceptance, which is worth keeping for your insurer and a future sale.
Life in Newmarket
Commuters, storms and finished basements
Plenty of Newmarket households drive to work on Highway 404 or Yonge Street. Once a family switches to an electric car, charging overnight in the driveway is the easy part. The question is whether the panel can carry the charger alongside the dryer, the stove and the air conditioner.
Winter ice and summer thunderstorms both knock out power in York Region from time to time. In a house with a finished basement, the sump pump is the circuit owners worry about most. A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch takes over without anyone having to be home.

Questions
Newmarket electrical questions
Who is the electricity utility in Newmarket?
Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution delivers power to homes in Newmarket. Some jobs, such as a panel upgrade, need the service shut off and reconnected. We book that with them for you. You don't need to call them yourself.
Do you work in every part of Newmarket?
Yes. We take on jobs across the whole town, from Downtown Newmarket and Gorham-College Manor to Stonehaven, Summerhill Estates, Glenway, Woodland Hill and Copper Hills. Emergency calls are answered around the clock.
My Newmarket house is from the 1970s. Is the wiring a concern?
Often it's fine, but it's worth knowing what you have. Some Ontario homes from the late 1960s and 1970s were wired with aluminum branch circuits. An electrical inspection tells you which wiring is in the walls and what condition the panel is in.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. For an electrical emergency call (647) 930-2907 any time, day or night. If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 911 first. If a power line is down, stay well back and call your hydro utility's emergency line.
