Electrical work in Brampton
A town, a planned suburb, then a city of subdivisions
Brampton started as a small town around Main Street and Queen Street, still known as the Four Corners. Houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s remain nearby, and in the village of Churchville beside the Credit River.
Bramalea came next. It was planned in the late 1950s as a complete community east of the old town. Most of it went up through the 1960s and 70s. Its streets are grouped into lettered sections, so names within a section share a first letter. Heart Lake followed to the north in the 1970s and 80s.
From the 1990s on, growth moved north and west. Fletcher's Meadow, Sandringham-Wellington, Springdale, Castlemore, Mount Pleasant and Credit Valley are largely subdivisions from the last thirty years.
Brampton is in Peel Region, and its homes are supplied by Alectra Utilities. Building permits and second-unit registration come from the City of Brampton. The electrical permit is a separate notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority, and we file it for you.
Brampton housing by era
What we tend to find, area by area
A rough guide only. Plenty of homes have been updated since they were built, and the panel itself is the real answer.
| Built | Where | Typical homes | What we often find |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late 1800s to 1940s | Downtown Brampton, Churchville | Brick and frame houses, some with heritage status | Wiring from several eras and small services |
| 1960s and 70s | Bramalea | Bungalows, backsplits, semis and townhouses | Crowded 100 amp panels and some aluminum branch wiring |
| 1970s and 80s | Heart Lake | Two-storeys and split-levels | Panels at their limit once kitchens and basements change |
| 1990s to 2010s | Fletcher's Meadow, Sandringham-Wellington, Springdale, Castlemore, Mount Pleasant, Credit Valley | Detached homes, semis and townhouses | 100 to 200 amps, often shared with a basement unit |
Two households, one service
Second units and multigenerational homes
Brampton has a large number of houses with a legal second unit, usually in the basement. Many more are home to three generations of one family. Electrically, both mean two kitchens, more laundry and often more cars on one service.
A service sized for a single family in 2005 can struggle with that. Before a basement unit is wired, we run a load calculation for the whole house with both units counted. Sometimes the existing service has room. Often it needs a panel upgrade in Brampton first.
The suite brings its own requirements. The fire separation between units, the exits and the interconnected smoke alarms are building code items the City checks. The suite's wiring is inspected by ESA. We wire to both.
Older homes
Heritage houses downtown and Bramalea's first streets
Older houses near the Four Corners and in Churchville have been wired and rewired many times over a century. In houses that old, knob-and-tube wiring can still be hidden in walls or attics.
In Bramalea, the question is age and load more than layout. Many homes there are now fifty to sixty years old. Some built from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s were wired with aluminum branch circuits. That is not a reason for alarm, but every connection on it needs devices rated for aluminum.
An electrical inspection tells you what your house actually has. If the answer is new wiring, read about rewiring in Brampton.

Questions
Brampton electrical questions
Who supplies electricity in Brampton?
Alectra Utilities. Brampton was served by Hydro One Brampton until 2017, when it became part of Alectra. When a job needs the supply to your house turned off or changed, Alectra does the disconnect and reconnect. We request that appointment and plan our work around it.
Can you do the electrical for a legal basement unit in Brampton?
Yes. The building permit and the registration of the second unit go through the City of Brampton, usually arranged by you or your designer. We file the ESA notification for the electrical work, wire the suite, and check that the service can carry both households.
Our Bramalea backsplit still has its original panel. Should it be replaced?
Age alone doesn't decide it. What matters is the panel's condition, whether it has spaces left, and what you plan to add. A full panel, signs of heat or an insurer asking questions are good reasons to look closely. We give you a straight answer after seeing it.
Do you work on older houses downtown and in Churchville?
Yes. Inside the house, we route new wiring to disturb as little original plaster and trim as we can. Churchville is a heritage conservation district, so changes to the outside of a house there can need the City's heritage review first. That can matter if a meter has to move.
Do you take out the ESA permit?
Yes. In Ontario, the licensed contractor files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and books the inspection. We handle it on every job that needs one, and you get the ESA Certificate of Acceptance when the work passes. Keep it: insurers and home buyers often ask for it.
