24/7 emergency electrician in Toronto and the GTA
Power out in part of the house, a burning smell, a sparking outlet or storm damage? Call us on (647) 930-2907, day or night.
Safety first
If you see smoke, flames or sparks you can't stop, leave the house and call 911. If a power line is down, stay at least 10 metres away and call your hydro utility's emergency line. Then call us.
Call us right away if you have
- A burning or hot plastic smell from an outlet, switch or the panel
- Outlets or switches that spark, buzz or feel warm
- Part of the house without power when the neighbours have it
- A breaker that trips again as soon as you reset it
- Water near the panel, wiring or outlets after a leak or flood
- Damage to the service mast or meter after a storm or a fallen tree
Emergency electrician number, 24/7
Our emergency number is (647) 930-2907. It's the same line day and night, weekends included. Save it in your phone now, so nobody has to search for it in a dark house.
What happens when you call
You speak to us, not a call centre. We ask a few questions to judge how urgent it is and what you can safely do in the meantime, then give you an arrival time. On site, we make the problem safe first, then explain the permanent fix and its cost before doing it.
What you can safely do while you wait
- If one circuit is the problem, switch its breaker off and leave it off. Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips straight away.
- Unplug anything on that circuit, especially heaters and appliances that were running when it happened.
- If there's water near the panel or outlets, don't touch the panel. Keep people and pets out of the wet area.
- If the whole street is dark, it's probably a utility outage. Check Toronto Hydro's or Alectra's outage map before calling an electrician.
- Note what you saw, smelled or heard and when. It helps us find the cause faster.
Is it an emergency, or can it wait until morning?
Anything involving heat, smell, smoke, sparks or water is an emergency, because those are signs of a fault that can start a fire or give a shock. A single dead outlet, a light that won't come on, or a breaker that trips only when you run two appliances together can usually wait for a scheduled troubleshooting visit at daytime rates. If you're not sure, call: we'll tell you honestly which it is.
Common calls
What usually causes an electrical emergency
The symptom tells us where to start. These are the causes we look for first.
| Symptom | Common causes | What we do first |
|---|---|---|
| Burning smell or warm outlet | Loose or overheated connection, overloaded circuit, failing device | Isolate the circuit, find the hot spot, replace damaged parts |
| Half the house without power | Failed main breaker, loose service connection, or a fault on one leg of the service | Test the service and panel, then involve the utility if the fault is on their side |
| Breaker trips instantly | Short circuit or ground fault in wiring or an appliance | Disconnect loads and trace the fault before re-energizing |
| Water near the panel or outlets | Roof or plumbing leak, basement flooding | De-energize affected circuits, dry out, test insulation before restoring |
| Damaged mast or meter after a storm | Fallen branch or ice load on the service drop | Make safe, repair our side, and coordinate reconnection with the utility |
Questions
24/7 emergency electrician: common questions
Do you offer 24/7 emergency service?
Yes. For an electrical emergency call (647) 930-2907 any time, day or night. If you see smoke or fire, leave the house and call 911 first. If a power line is down, stay well back and call your hydro utility's emergency line.
What changes the cost of an emergency call?
Mostly four things. The time of day, because an after-hours visit costs more than a daytime one. The fault itself, and how long it takes to find. The parts, from a single breaker to a new service mast. And whether the repair needs an ESA permit or the utility, as storm damage to a mast usually does. We give you the call-out rate when you phone and price the repair before starting it.
How does a service call work?
A service or diagnostic call is a first visit to find the cause of a problem. We give you the rate when you book, test the circuit, tell you what we found, and give you the price to fix it before we do any work. Many simple jobs can also be priced from photos.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Marrast Contracting is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, licence ECRA/ESA 7016430, and every job is led by Shaldin Marrast, a Master Electrician. You can check our licence on the Electrical Safety Authority's contractor lookup at esasafe.com.
