Electrical work in Oakville

Two Oakvilles, one licensed crew

South of the QEW, Oakville is one of the oldest settled towns on the lake. Old Oakville, Bronte and the streets around Lakeshore Road include 19th-century houses, 1920s cottages and post-war bungalows that have been renovated, extended and sometimes rebuilt. North of Dundas, the picture flips: whole neighbourhoods have been built in the last two decades, with large detached homes, townhouses and new schools going up across the North Oakville plan.

The electrical work follows the housing. In the older south, it's usually about catching up: a panel or service that predates air conditioning, ungrounded circuits, additions wired to different standards, and kitchens that now run far more than they were designed for. In the newer north, homes are generally sound, and the requests are about adding: a Level 2 EV charger, a standby generator, finished-basement circuits and pot lights in rooms that shipped with a single ceiling box.

Building permits in Oakville come from the Town of Oakville. Electrical permits come from the Electrical Safety Authority, and we file them on every job that needs one.

What we look for in older Oakville homes

These are the findings that most often shape the plan in lakeside and downtown houses.

  • A 60 or 100 amp service

Enough for the house as it was built, but not for central air, a heat pump, an induction range and a car charger together.

  • Wiring from several eras

Original circuits sharing a panel with 1970s additions and recent renovation work, not always labelled.

  • Ungrounded outlets

Two-prong receptacles, or three-prong ones installed without a ground conductor behind them.

  • Crowded panels

Tandem breakers and small sub-panels added over the years until there's no clean space left.

  • Older exterior feeds

Garage, shed and garden circuits that predate today's outdoor-rated materials and ground-fault protection.

  • Insurance questions

Insurers asking about the panel and wiring age before renewing a policy on an older home.

Full home wiring

Rewiring a lived-in house

When the old wiring has reached the end of its life, full home rewiring is the cleanest fix. We start with an electrical inspection so the plan is built on what's actually in the walls, then rewire floor by floor so the family keeps power in the kitchen and bedrooms while we work. Most of the new cable is fished through existing cavities from the basement and attic; where a wall has to open, we cut neatly and leave it ready for your plasterer.

Rewiring is also the right moment for a panel upgrade. A new 200 amp service, sized from a proper load calculation, gives the house room for everything you plan to add over the next twenty years.

North Oakville

Adding to a newer home

Newer homes above Dundas usually have a 200 amp service, which makes most additions straightforward. Before installing an EV charger or a generator, we still check the load: a large house with two furnaces or heat pumps, a hot tub and a finished basement can use more of that capacity than people expect. If the panel is tight, a load management device can let the charger share capacity instead of forcing a service upgrade.

Garages in newer subdivisions are often on the far side of the house from the panel. We plan the cable route in advance so the run is tidy, protected and as short as it can be.

What customers say

Reviews from our customers

Over the years I have used a lot of contractors but these guys are simply the best. Full end to end service, I did not have to worry about a thing. Design, layout, permit, installation, patching, painting, etc. After completion, it was like they never had to run electrical conduits and cables throughout my house.

Hilton R.Google review · Design, permit and installation

Shaldin installed new pot lights in my condo and I'm thrilled with his work. Netsayi was also delightful to deal with for scheduling. I would recommend Marrast Contracting - fair pricing, solid work, with both clear and effective communication throughout.

Hannah W.Google review · Pot lights, condo

100% recommend! Marrast has been amazing to work with! Shaldin was super helpful in assessing and finding the right path forward for hardwiring sconces in my apartment without having to deal with concrete and Michael's attention to detail on the install was impeccable. I had them back this spring to install a ceiling medallion and pendant light and I love it! Will definitely be booking again when needed!

Dominique W.Google review · Sconces and a pendant light, apartment

[Shaldin] came out to my place on short notice to have a look at an electrical issue I was having. He was the most reasonably priced from the couple quotes I got for a maintenance call, he was friendly and easy going, explained everything in a way I could understand and diagnosed and fixed the issue quickly with no extra surprises thrown my way. Highly recommend him and will be the only electrician I call in the future.

Roxane O.Google review · Service call

Marrast Contracting did an amazing job with all of our electrical and connectivity needs. He's knowledgeable, reliable, and very easy to work with.

Johnny O.Google review · Electrical and connectivity

[Shaldin] is very clear, responsive and did a great job adding a sub panel, explaining the process and even discovering potential issues that may arise in the future. I have hired Marrast before and I will do it again, would definitely recommend.

Questions

Oakville electrical questions

Who supplies electricity in Oakville, and does it matter for my upgrade?

Most of Oakville is supplied by Oakville Hydro, not Toronto Hydro or Alectra. It matters because a service upgrade needs the utility to disconnect your old service and reconnect the new one after ESA has passed our work. We book that appointment with Oakville Hydro for you and confirm the date before the job starts.

Do you charge extra to come out to Oakville?

Oakville is further out, so a job here includes travel time. It's written on your quote as its own line before you book, and it doesn't change once the work is scheduled.

Can you work in a heritage home in Old Oakville?

Yes. Older homes need a careful approach: fishing new cable through existing cavities, opening plaster only where there's no other route, and keeping original trim intact. If your home is in a heritage conservation district, exterior changes such as a new meter location or a generator pad may also need the Town's heritage approval, so we raise that early.

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. We do a load calculation on your home first. If your panel has room, we install the charger on its own circuit. If it doesn't, the options are a panel or service upgrade, or in some homes a load management device that lets the charger share capacity. We'll tell you which applies.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Marrast Contracting is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, licence ECRA/ESA 7016430, and every job is led by Shaldin Marrast, a Master Electrician. You can check our licence on the Electrical Safety Authority's contractor lookup at esasafe.com.
