Light where you walk, look and park

Good outdoor lighting does three jobs: it makes the house safer to approach at night, it makes it harder for anyone to approach unseen, and it shows off the house and garden. Doing all three without turning the front yard into a parking lot takes some planning.

We start with how you use the outside of the house. Where do you park, which door do guests use, where do the kids play in the evening, and what would you like to see from the kitchen window? Then we place lights to answer those questions, with warm colour temperatures that look natural, and fixtures aimed so they don't shine into your neighbours' windows.

Controls that run themselves

Outdoor lights are most useful when you don't have to think about them. Photocells turn lights on at dusk, timers turn decorative lighting off at a set hour, and motion sensors bring security lights up when someone approaches. Smart switches let you control it all from your phone.

Safety outdoors

Outdoor electrical work has to cope with rain, snow, road salt and freeze-thaw cycles. That means fixtures and boxes rated for wet locations, outlets with GFCI protection and weatherproof covers that work while something is plugged in, and cable rated and installed for where it runs. Anything buried is located first through Ontario One Call. We file the ESA permit for the work and it's inspected like any other job.

We install outdoor lighting across the GTA, from established neighbourhoods in Etobicoke and Forest Hill to newer homes in Vaughan and Richmond Hill. Planning an EV charger on the driveway as well? We can run both at the same time. See EV charger installation.

Questions

Outdoor and landscape lighting: common questions

Low-voltage or line-voltage landscape lighting?

Low-voltage systems run from a transformer and are flexible and easy to adjust, which suits garden and path lighting. Line-voltage fixtures run at household voltage and suit brighter security lights and permanent fixtures on the house. Many homes use both.

Can you add soffit pot lights to my house?

Yes, soffit lights are one of the most popular outdoor upgrades. They wash the front of the house in light and are switched or timed from inside. We check the soffit construction and plan the wiring route from the attic.

Do you need to dig for outdoor lighting?

Sometimes, for lights away from the house or a post at the end of the driveway. Before any digging, underground utilities are located through Ontario One Call, so no one hits a gas or hydro line.

Will outdoor lights survive the winter?

Fixtures rated for wet locations, proper weatherproof boxes and covers, and wiring installed to code hold up well through freeze and thaw. Cheap fixtures are usually what fails, so we recommend quality ones.

Do you take out the ESA permit?

Yes. In Ontario, the licensed contractor files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and books the inspection. We handle it on every job that needs one, and you get the ESA Certificate of Acceptance when the work passes. Keep it: insurers and home buyers often ask for it.
