Electrical panel and service upgrades for Vaughan homes
Most Vaughan houses already have breakers, and many have 200 amps. The usual problem is a panel with no spaces left. Or a service that can't carry a charger, a heat pump and a finished basement at once.
Why Vaughan panels fill up
A modern panel, a busier house
Vaughan grew fast and recently. The big subdivisions in Woodbridge and on the Vaughan side of Thornhill came first. Maple followed, and Vellore Village, Patterson and Sonoma Heights filled in after 2000. Very few of these houses have fuses. Most have a breaker panel that was perfectly sized for the family who first moved in.
What has changed is the list of things plugged into it. Many Vaughan two-storeys now have central air, a finished basement and a home office or two. There's often an electric car in the garage, with a second on the list. Larger and newer houses are more likely to have 200 amps, but plenty of townhouses and smaller detached homes were built with 100.
So the job here is rarely about replacing something unsafe. It's about finding room for what you want to add, and doing it in the way that costs least and lasts longest.
Three ways to make room
Not every full panel needs a new service
The load calculation decides which of these fits your house.
| Sub-panel | Load management | Service upgrade | |
|---|---|---|---|
| When it fits | The service has spare capacity but the panel has no spaces | One big new load, such as a charger, can wait its turn | The house needs more power than the service can deliver |
| What changes | A second panel fed from the first | A device that pauses the new load when the house is busy | A new meter base, panel and larger main breaker |
| Alectra involved | No | No | Yes, for the disconnect and reconnect |
| Typical Vaughan case | A basement finish in Maple or Sonoma Heights | A Level 2 charger on a 100 amp townhouse | A heat pump plus two EVs, or a large addition |
With Alectra Utilities
How a Vaughan service upgrade runs
Look at the house
We open the panel, check the meter and the service entrance, and list everything you plan to add.
Size it on paper
The load calculation shows whether you need a sub-panel, load management or a bigger service.
Fix the price
You get one written price covering equipment, labour, the ESA permit and the utility request.
Book the date
We arrange the disconnect and reconnect with Alectra and confirm the day with you.
Swap and sign off
The new equipment goes in, every circuit is labelled, ESA inspects, and you keep the Certificate of Acceptance.
Underground services
What's under the lawn matters
Most Vaughan subdivisions are fed underground, from a transformer box near the street to a meter on the side of the house. That keeps wires off the poles, but it means a service upgrade can involve the buried cable as well as the panel. We look at the meter base and the service entrance at the site visit so the quote reflects what your house actually has.
Custom homes in Kleinburg and Woodbridge
Custom homes on large Kleinburg lots and rebuilds on older Woodbridge streets are planned around big loads. Think several furnaces, a pool, a generator and a multi-car garage. Some of these need a service larger than 200 amps. We size it from the drawings and coordinate the connection with Alectra, so the house is not short of power the day you move in.

Questions
Panel upgrades in Vaughan: questions
My Vaughan home already has 200 amps. Why is the panel full?
Amps and spaces are two different limits. A builder often fills most of the breaker slots on day one, then a finished basement, a hot tub and a charger take the rest. A load calculation tells us whether you need more capacity or just more room, which can be solved with a sub-panel.
Who arranges the Alectra disconnect?
We do. When a job needs the service disconnected or enlarged, we send the request to Alectra Utilities. Then we confirm the date with you and book our crew for that day. You don't need to call the utility yourself.
Can I add a sub-panel for the basement instead of upgrading?
Often, yes, if the service itself has capacity to spare. A sub-panel fed from the main panel gives the basement its own breakers without any utility work. If the load calculation shows the service is already near its limit, a sub-panel only moves the problem, and we'll tell you so.
How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?
Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
