Pot light and lighting installation in Oakville

In an older Oakville home, pot lights mean working carefully through plaster. In a newer one, they usually mean adding light to rooms that came with a single ceiling box. We plan the layout for each room and wire it with LED-rated dimmers.

South Oakville

Lighting older rooms without losing their character

Homes in Old Oakville and Bronte often have high ceilings, plaster and original details worth protecting. Many were built with a single central fixture or none at all. Owners want more light, but not a grid of holes across a ceiling that has lasted a century.

So we start with how the room is used. Pot lights placed around the edges to wash the walls, a pair over a reading chair, a few aimed at artwork. Grouped on separate dimmers, they leave the original fixture in charge while filling in what it can't reach.

Plaster takes more care than drywall. We cut cleanly, support the ceiling around each opening and fish cable along the joists. Where a ceiling is decorative, wall lights or surface fixtures can be a better fit, and we'll say so.

Newer homes, builder lighting

Many newer Oakville homes were sold with a ceiling box in the middle of each room and little else. Adding pot lights is one of the first upgrades owners make.

Getting the details right

Fixtures, dimmers and attics

The cheapest pot light is rarely the right one. Under an attic, fixtures must be airtight and rated for insulation contact. Otherwise warm, moist air leaks upward and frosts on the roof deck in winter. That matters in every Oakville home with a ceiling below an attic, old or new.

LED fixtures also need a dimmer designed for them. The wrong one causes flicker, buzzing or lights that won't dim smoothly. We match the dimmer to the fixtures and test each zone from full to low.

  • Dark kitchens at night

Counters in shadow because the only light is behind you.

  • Old cans running hot

Incandescent housings that can be replaced with LED fixtures.

  • Lights that buzz on a dimmer

Usually a dimmer that wasn't made for LED.

Lighting on Oakville renovations and rebuilds

When a south Oakville house is renovated or rebuilt, lighting is planned with the drawings. Recessed, stair, under-cabinet and exterior lights each get the right circuit. That is far simpler before drywall than after. For fixture types and options, see our pot lights and lighting page, or read about all our work in Oakville.

Questions

Pot lights and lighting in Oakville: questions

Can pot lights go into the plaster ceilings of an Old Oakville house?

Yes, with care. Plaster over lath is harder and more brittle than drywall, so we cut with the right tools and support the ceiling around each hole. Cable is fished between joists wherever we can. Where a ceiling is ornate or original, we'll discuss whether surface fixtures or wall lights suit it better.

Our north Oakville house has one light per room. Is adding pot lights a big job?

Usually not. Upper floors sit under an open attic, which gives easy access for cable. Main floors take a little more work because bedrooms are above. Slim LED fixtures need only a small hole and no bulky housing.

Is a small lighting job in Oakville worth the trip?

It can be, especially if you bundle it. Travel time is part of an Oakville quote. Adding a few rooms, an exterior light or a dimmer swap to the same visit makes better use of it. Send us the whole list.

What if we want to keep our original light fixtures?

Many older Oakville homes have fixtures worth keeping. Pot lights don't have to replace them. A few well-placed recessed lights on their own dimmer can fill the room while the original fixture stays as the centrepiece.
