Generac home standby generators for Oakville
Mature trees, lake weather and large homes make backup power worth considering in Oakville. We size the generator to what you need running, find a location that meets every clearance and connect it through an automatic transfer switch. Generac units come through us as an authorized dealer.
Why Oakville owners add backup power
Big trees, lake weather and a lot to lose
South Oakville is known for its canopy. Old Oakville, Bronte and the lakeside streets of Eastlake are lined with mature trees, many of them over the overhead lines. In wind, ice or heavy wet snow, falling limbs are a common cause of outages. Weather off Lake Ontario can make those storms sharper near the shore.
The houses themselves raise the stakes. Large homes often have finished lower levels, home offices and sump pumps working hard after rain. When the power drops, the sump pump stops and the furnace blower stops with it. A standby generator restarts them automatically within seconds, whether you are home or travelling.
Newer homes north of Dundas face the same storms with a different setup. Their services come in underground, but the wider grid can still go down, and their basements are just as likely to be finished.
Where it can go
Placement across Oakville
The rules on clearances are the same everywhere. What changes is how much space the lot gives you.
| Where you live | What the lot usually offers | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Eastlake and the lakeside estates | Large lots with room to choose | Longer gas and cable runs; whole-home units are common |
| Old Oakville | Mature lots, some in heritage districts | Rear-yard placement and possible heritage approval |
| Bronte | Mid-sized post-war lots | Side or rear yard, often with a service upgrade first |
| Glen Abbey to north of Dundas | Suburban lots, narrower on newer streets | Rear yards and careful window clearances |
Choosing a size
What should stay on when the street goes dark?
Generator size follows from the list of circuits you want running. A modest Bronte bungalow may need only essentials. A large home with several furnaces or heat pumps, central air and a pool may justify whole-home coverage. We go through the panel with you and settle the list before pricing anything.
- EssentialsHeating, sump pump, fridge, freezer, some lights and the internet
- ExtendedAdds the kitchen, an office and part of the cooling
- Whole homeEverything, sized to match the full service
- Critical equipmentMedical devices or work systems that can't lose power

The panel connection
Older services first
A standby generator connects through your panel and transfer switch. In south Oakville, a full 60 or 100 amp panel is usually best replaced in the same project. See panel upgrades in Oakville. For how standby systems work, read our backup generators page.

Backup generators in Oakville: questions
Can a standby generator go beside a house in a heritage district?
It may need more than an electrical permit. In Oakville's heritage conservation districts, visible exterior changes can need the Town's heritage approval. A rear-yard location is often simpler. We look at placement with that in mind and tell you early if an approval is likely.
Our north Oakville lot has narrow side yards. Is there room?
Sometimes not at the side. The unit must keep set distances from windows, doors, vents and the lot line, and newer streets often leave little space between houses. The rear yard usually works better, or a smaller essentials unit that fits the space available.
Does the generator feed Oakville Hydro's lines during an outage?
No, and it must never be able to. The automatic transfer switch disconnects your home from the grid before the generator starts. That protects the crews restoring power and keeps your generator from trying to power the street.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running during an outage. Some homeowners back up essentials only (furnace, sump pump, fridge, a few lights and outlets). Others want the whole house. We look at your panel and how you use power, then recommend a size and a transfer switch to match.
