Level 2 EV charger installation in Oakville

Your car might sleep behind a Bronte bungalow or in a two-car garage north of Dundas. Either way, the install starts with a load check and a planned circuit route.

Two kinds of Oakville driveway

Detached garages in the south, attached garages in the north

Many older homes in Old Oakville and Bronte have a long driveway leading to a detached garage at the back, or no garage at all. The charger then goes on the garage wall or an outside wall by the driveway. Either way, the circuit has a long trip from a panel that is often in an older basement.

North of Dundas, and in Glen Abbey, River Oaks and West Oak Trails, attached two-car garages are the norm. The panel is in the basement, sometimes on the opposite side of the house. The run is shorter than to a detached garage but has to pass through finished space.

The panel is the other half of the picture. Older south Oakville services of 60 or 100 amps often can't take a 40 to 60 amp charger circuit without help. Newer 200 amp homes usually can, after a load check.

Your panel's answer

Room, load management or an upgrade

A Level 2 charger draws a large, steady load for hours. Before recommending anything, we calculate what your home already uses at its busiest. The result points to one of three paths.

  • The panel has room

A dedicated circuit goes onto your existing panel. Common in newer north Oakville homes.

  • It's close

A load management device lets the charger use capacity when the house isn't.

  • There's no room

The service is upgraded first, and the charger circuit goes in the same day.

If an upgrade is needed, see panel upgrades in Oakville. Doing both jobs together means one Oakville Hydro appointment and one trip.

Two cars

Charging a second EV in Oakville

Many Oakville households run two cars, and more are going electric on both. Two full chargers on separate circuits can be more than a busy service can carry. Chargers that share a circuit and balance power between the cars often cover two commutes overnight. We explain the trade-off in charging speed before you decide. For charger types and features, read our EV chargers page.

Questions

EV chargers in Oakville: questions

Our garage in Old Oakville is detached and at the back of the lot. Can it have a charger?

Usually, yes. We run a circuit from the house panel to the garage, most often underground across the yard. If you also want lights and outlets in the garage, a small sub-panel there can be the tidier answer. Trees and roots shape the route, so we look at the yard carefully.

Our north Oakville house has 200 amps. Is a charger automatic?

Usually it's straightforward, but we still check. A large home with two furnaces or heat pumps, a finished basement and a hot tub can use more capacity than people expect. A load calculation confirms the circuit fits, or shows where load management helps.

Can you install chargers in a condo along Lakeshore Road?

We can assess it with your property manager and board. They need to agree on capacity, metering and billing, and the route to your parking stall. We give them a clear electrical proposal to review before anything is installed.

Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. We do a load calculation on your home first. If your panel has room, we install the charger on its own circuit. If it doesn't, the options are a panel or service upgrade, or in some homes a load management device that lets the charger share capacity. We'll tell you which applies.
