Pot light installation for Newmarket homes
Many Newmarket homes were built with one light in the middle of each ceiling, or none at all. We add pot lights on dimmers so living rooms, kitchens and basements are bright where you need them.
Newmarket ceilings
Lighting homes that started out dim
Lighting standards were very different when much of Newmarket was built. A typical 1970s or 1980s living room had a switched lamp outlet and no ceiling light at all. Kitchens got one fixture over the table and maybe one by the sink.
Older homes near Main Street have their own challenges. Many have plaster and lath ceilings, and the framing above can be irregular. We open small test holes where needed and plan around what we find.
In Woodland Hill and Copper Hills, the issue is often height. Great rooms and open-plan kitchens with tall ceilings need fixtures with the right beam spread, set out so the light reaches the floor without glare.

Choosing fixtures
Colour, brightness and dimming
Many homeowners choose a warm white for living spaces and a slightly cooler white for kitchens and work areas. Some fixtures let you pick the colour temperature with a switch on the housing, which makes matching rooms easy.
Dimmers matter as much as the fixtures. We pair each set of lights with a dimmer rated for LED loads, which avoids flicker and buzzing at low settings. For our full range of interior and exterior lighting, see pot lights and lighting, or browse everything we do on the Newmarket page.
Questions
Pot lights and lighting in Newmarket: questions
Can you install pot lights in a plaster ceiling in an older Newmarket house?
Yes. Plaster needs sharper tools and more care than drywall, and we check what's above the ceiling before cutting. Where the joists or old wiring make a layout difficult, we adjust the spacing rather than force it.
Our backsplit's bedrooms have no ceiling lights. Can you add them?
Usually. Many homes of that era put a switched outlet in bedrooms instead of a ceiling fixture. We can run new wiring to the ceiling from the attic above and keep the existing switch or replace it with a dimmer.
Do pot lights under the attic cause heat loss?
They can if the wrong fixture is used. On a top-floor ceiling, we install fixtures rated for contact with insulation and designed to limit air leakage. That keeps the attic insulation in place and stops warm air escaping in winter.
How many pot lights does a room need?
It depends on the ceiling height, the size of the room and how you use it. We plan the layout around furniture, counters and artwork rather than a fixed grid. Each zone gets its own dimmer.
