Where the upgrades are

Why Newmarket panels get replaced

The oldest homes in Downtown Newmarket were wired long before anyone owned a microwave. Where they still run on fuses or a 60 amp main, the upgrade is usually about safety, insurance and making room for modern appliances.

In established neighbourhoods like Gorham-College Manor, Huron Heights and Bristol-London, a common story is a 100 amp breaker panel with every slot used. Tandem breakers have been squeezed in over the years, and the next project has nowhere to connect. The fix may be a larger service, or it may be a sub-panel if the load calculation allows it.

Newer homes in Woodland Hill and Copper Hills rarely need a full service change. When they do, it's because the owners are adding several big loads at once, such as a charger, a hot tub and a basement apartment.

Signs

Your Newmarket panel may be due

  • Fuses, or a 60 amp main

Still found in some older houses near Main Street, and a concern for many insurers.

  • No spaces left

Every breaker slot is full and new circuits have nowhere to go.

  • Warm or buzzing equipment

Heat or noise at the panel needs a licensed electrician soon.

  • Big plans

A finished basement, an addition, central air or an EV charger on the list.

Older houses

When the panel isn't the only issue

Swapping the panel in an older downtown house often uncovers wiring that needs attention too. We tell you what we see before the walls close, and price any extra work separately so you can decide.

If the house is due for both, it can make sense to plan them together. See our rewiring page for Newmarket, or everything we do locally on the Newmarket page.

Questions

Panel upgrades in Newmarket: questions

Do I have to contact Newmarket-Tay Power Distribution myself?

No. We arrange the disconnect and reconnect with them as part of the job. You'll know the date in advance. We plan the work to keep the house without power for as short a time as possible.

My Gorham-College Manor bungalow has a 100 amp panel. Is that enough?

It can be, for the house as it is today. It gets tight once you add central air, a hot tub, a basement suite or an EV charger. A load calculation shows how much room you have before you spend anything on a bigger service.

Can the new panel go somewhere other than where the old one is?

Sometimes. Older Newmarket homes often have the panel in a cramped corner of the basement or behind a finished wall. Moving it is possible, but the meter location and the route of the service cable decide what makes sense. We'll show you the options at the site visit.

How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?

Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
