Pot light installation in Mississauga homes and condos
Many Mississauga living rooms were built with a switched outlet for a lamp and no ceiling light at all. We lay out slim LED pot lights for the way you use each room. Then we fish the wiring through finished ceilings and fit LED-rated dimmers.
Mississauga ceilings
Living rooms built for table lamps
Walk into a 1970s or 80s two-storey in Erin Mills or Meadowvale and you'll often find the same thing. The living room and family room have no ceiling fixture. Instead, one wall outlet is switched at the door, meant for a floor lamp. It was standard practice for builders of the time, and it leaves those rooms dim and patchy after dark.
Pot lights are the most common fix. Because the ceiling is finished drywall with bedrooms above, we fish the wiring between joists rather than opening the ceiling. Slim LED fixtures help here: they need no bulky housing, so they fit where a joist or duct would block an older can light.
The post-war bungalows of Applewood and Lakeview are easier in one way. The main floor sits under an attic, so we can often run cable from above. That access comes with a responsibility, which we cover below.
By room and building
How the install differs across Mississauga
| Setting | What's above the ceiling | How we approach it |
|---|---|---|
| Bungalow main floor | Attic with insulation | Airtight fixtures rated for insulation contact, wired from the attic |
| Two-storey main floor | Bedrooms and floor joists | Fished between joists, with small access holes only where needed |
| Finished basement | Ductwork, pipes and a drywall ceiling | Slim fixtures that fit under ducts without lowering the ceiling |
| Condo unit | Concrete slab | Bulkheads, a dropped section, or surface-mounted slim lights |
Under an attic
Why the fixture rating matters in a bungalow
Every hole cut into a ceiling below an attic is a path for warm, humid air. In a Mississauga winter, that air meets the cold roof deck and frosts, and in spring it melts back down. Fixtures that are airtight and rated for direct contact with insulation stop that. We use them on every top-floor ceiling and restore the insulation around each one.
Basements in newer subdivisions
In Churchill Meadows and the other subdivisions from the late 1990s and 2000s, basement finishing is often the reason for the call. Ceilings there are crowded with ducts, pipes and beams. Slim fixtures sit right against the drywall, so the room keeps its height. Zoning matters too: a basement used for movies, homework and guests needs more than one switch.
Dark corners after sunset
A single fixture or a lamp outlet can't light a whole room evenly.
Old pot lights running hot
Older incandescent cans can be replaced with LED fixtures in the same holes.
LEDs that flicker on a dimmer
Usually a dimmer made for incandescent bulbs, which we replace.

Lighting design on Mineola and Lorne Park rebuilds
On a custom home, lighting is planned with the drawings. Pot lights, stair lights, under-cabinet strips, pendants and exterior lights each get the right circuit and control. Getting that right before drywall is far easier than adding to it afterwards. Pot lights and lighting in Mississauga: questions
Our Meadowvale living room has no ceiling light. Can you add pot lights without opening the ceiling?
Usually with very little opening. Slim LED fixtures need only a round hole, and we fish cable between joists from one fixture to the next. On a main floor below a bedroom, a few small access holes may be needed where the cable has to cross a joist. We keep those small, few and ready for patching.
Can you put pot lights in a Port Credit condo?
Often, but the ceiling decides how. Many condos have concrete ceilings, which means working within a bulkhead, adding a dropped section, or using slim surface-mounted lights instead. We also check the building's rules and book access with management.
Do pot lights below an attic cause problems in winter?
They can if the wrong fixture is used. A light that isn't airtight lets warm, moist air into the attic, where it can frost on the underside of the roof. We use fixtures rated for insulation contact and airtight where they sit below an attic, which is common in Mississauga bungalows.
How many pot lights does a typical living room need?
It depends on the room's size, ceiling height and what you use it for. We lay them out around seating, artwork and walkways rather than in a fixed grid. Splitting them into zones lets you set the light lower in the evening.
