Electrical panel and service upgrades for Mississauga homes

A Mississauga panel tells you which decade the house was built in. We read it, size a new service from a load calculation, book Alectra Utilities and see the job through ESA inspection.

Mississauga, decade by decade

Why two panels a few streets apart can look nothing alike

Mississauga was not built all at once. Applewood, Lakeview and the older parts of Cooksville and Port Credit filled in through the 1950s and 60s. Erin Mills, Meadowvale and the newer edges of Streetsville came in the 1970s and 80s. Churchill Meadows and the northwest followed in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Each wave got the electrical service that was normal at the time. A 1950s Applewood bungalow may still have a 60 amp service. Or it may have a 100 amp panel that replaced fuses long ago and is now packed full. In a 1980s Meadowvale two-storey, 100 amps is common, often with a few tandem breakers squeezed in over the years. Homes from the 2000s usually have 200 amps, but a finished basement and two cars can still use most of it.

So we never quote a Mississauga panel upgrade from the postal code. We open the panel, look at the meter base and the service entrance, and do a load calculation for how your household actually uses power.

What usually prompts the call

Mississauga upgrade triggers by era

Patterns, not rules. Many homes have already been updated once, and the panel itself is the only reliable answer.

Working with Alectra

How a Mississauga service upgrade runs

Alectra Utilities supplies Mississauga, so the disconnect and reconnect are theirs. Everything else is ours to organize.

  1. Panel and meter assessment

We note the service size, the meter base condition and whether the supply comes in overhead or underground.

  2. Fixed written quote

Equipment, labour, the ESA notification and the utility coordination, priced once after the visit.

  3. Alectra appointment

We request the disconnect and reconnect and confirm the date with you before booking anything else.

  4. Changeover

Supply off, new meter base and panel in, each circuit landed and labelled as it moves across.

  5. Inspection and power back

ESA inspects and authorizes the connection, Alectra restores supply, and the Certificate of Acceptance follows.

Older lakeshore streets and rebuilds

From Lakeview bungalows to Mineola custom homes

Closer to the lake, the housing gets more varied. Lakeview and the side streets of Port Credit still have plenty of post-war bungalows, many of them fed by an overhead drop from a pole. Upgrading those usually means a new mast and weatherhead as well as the meter base and panel.

In Mineola and Lorne Park, the story is often a rebuild. A modest bungalow on a large, treed lot comes down and a much larger house goes up. That new home may need more than 200 amps once heat pumps, a large kitchen, a pool and EV charging are counted. Its service is designed on paper first, then installed in stages from temporary power to final connection.

Owners who are staying put and renovating sit in between. If you are adding a second storey or finishing a basement, plan the service with the project so Alectra only has to disconnect once. Thinking about a charger too? Read about EV chargers in Mississauga, or see the full panel upgrades overview.

Questions

Panel upgrades in Mississauga: questions

Our Erin Mills house has 100 amps and gas heat. Do we really need 200?

Not automatically. A 100 amp service can be enough for a gas-heated home with modest loads. It gets tight when you add central air, an induction range, a basement kitchen or a car charger. We do a load calculation and tell you plainly whether an upgrade is needed now or can wait.

Does Alectra have to be involved in my panel replacement?

If the work needs the service disconnected or the service size changes, yes. Alectra Utilities removes and restores the supply, and we request that appointment for you. A panel swap that keeps the existing service and can be done safely without a disconnect is rarer, and we'll tell you if yours qualifies.

We're planning a rebuild in Lorne Park. When should the electrician be involved?

Before demolition. The old house needs its service safely disconnected, the site needs temporary power, and the new service has to be sized from the finished design. Bringing us in at the drawing stage avoids redoing the panel location later.

How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?

Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
