Generac standby generator installation for Mississauga homes
When the power goes out in a Mississauga storm, the sump pump and furnace stop with it. We size a standby generator to what your household needs, find a spot that meets the clearances and wire it through an automatic transfer switch. We're an authorized Generac dealer, and we maintain what we install.
Why Mississauga owners ask
Finished basements and storm outages
A large share of Mississauga's houses have full basements, and in Erin Mills, Meadowvale and Churchill Meadows most of them have been finished. Family rooms, home offices, gyms and rental units now sit below grade. If the sump pump stops during a heavy summer storm, that is the part of the house that floods first.
Winter brings a different problem. Freezing rain can take down branches and lines across the city, and a gas furnace needs electricity for its blower and controls. A standby generator starts itself within seconds and keeps the furnace, sump pump, fridge and lights running, whether you are home or not.
Homes along the Credit River valley and on the older, heavily treed streets near the lake tend to sit under mature canopy. Those are the streets where fallen limbs most often bring down overhead lines in a storm.
Placement
Lot size changes everything
Where the generator can legally sit depends on the lot, and Mississauga lots vary a lot from one neighbourhood to the next.
| Where you live | Typical lot | What placement usually looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Mineola, Lorne Park | Large and deep, often treed | Plenty of options; whole-home units are common on rebuilds |
| Applewood, Lakeview | Mid-sized post-war lots | Side or rear yard, close to the gas meter and panel |
| Erin Mills, Meadowvale | Typical suburban detached | Usually workable, with clearances checked against windows |
| Churchill Meadows, newer streets | Narrow side yards | Often the rear yard, or an essentials-only unit |
Sizing
Essentials or the whole house
The unit size comes from a simple question: what must keep running? Most Mississauga families choose an essentials setup. A larger house with central air, a big kitchen and a pool may justify whole-home coverage. We go through your panel with you and build the list together.

Safety and the grid
Why the transfer switch is not optional
Power fed backwards from a house into Alectra Utilities' lines can injure the crews restoring your street. The automatic transfer switch separates your home from the grid before the generator takes the load, then hands back when utility power returns. Portable units plugged into a dryer outlet bypass that protection, which is why we never install them that way.
The generator connects through your panel. If the panel is old or full, it often makes sense to replace it in the same project; see panel upgrades in Mississauga. For how standby systems work in general, read our backup generators page.
Building new?
Plan for a generator now
On a Mineola or Lorne Park rebuild, a generator-ready panel and a planned pad location cost far less during construction than after.
Talk to usQuestions
Backup generators in Mississauga: questions
Will a standby generator fit beside my Churchill Meadows home?
Sometimes. Newer Mississauga subdivisions often have narrow side yards between detached houses. The unit must keep set distances from windows, doors, vents and the lot line. The rear yard is often the better spot. If no location meets the rules, we'll say so before you spend anything on equipment.
Does Alectra need to approve a home generator?
A permanently installed standby generator is permitted and inspected through ESA. What protects Alectra's line crews is the transfer switch, which disconnects your home from the grid before the generator starts. That is why we never connect a generator any other way.
We live in a Mississauga townhouse. Is a standby unit possible?
It depends on whether the townhouse is freehold or part of a condominium corporation, and on the space around it. Condo townhouses usually need the board's written approval for anything on the exterior. Freehold units still have to meet the clearances, which can be hard in a narrow yard.
What size generator do I need?
It depends on what you want running during an outage. Some homeowners back up essentials only (furnace, sump pump, fridge, a few lights and outlets). Others want the whole house. We look at your panel and how you use power, then recommend a size and a transfer switch to match.
