Pot lights and lighting for King homes

King homes have tall great rooms, vaulted ceilings, long halls and open stairs. We plan recessed lighting in layers and zones so each space works by day and night, and light barns and arenas with fixtures built for them.

King interiors

Big rooms need a plan

Many King homes are built at a scale where a few ceiling lights won't do. Great rooms rise two storeys. Kitchens run the length of the house. Hallways connect wings, and open staircases climb through the middle. Lighting those spaces well takes more than a grid of pot lights.

We start with how each room is used. Recessed lights give the general light. Pendants, wall lights and under-cabinet strips handle tasks. Accent lights pick out art, stone or millwork. Each layer goes on its own dimmer, so the room can be bright for cooking and soft for dinner.

Ceilings that take extra care

Vaulted and cathedral ceilings are common in King's larger houses. They're often insulated right behind the drywall, which calls for IC-rated, airtight fixtures and sloped-ceiling trims. Very tall flat ceilings need fixtures with a narrower beam so the light reaches the floor.

Barns and arenas

Lighting where the horses live

King has many horse properties, and their barns and arenas need light that suits the work. Stalls and aisles need even light for care and cleaning. Arenas need light across a wide floor without bright spots and shadows. Every fixture has to cope with dust, moisture and temperature swings.

Older barns often have bare bulbs on cable stapled to beams. We replace them with sealed fixtures on protected runs. If the barn's supply is undersized, we start with the feeder, then light the building. See wiring and rewiring in King for that side of the work.

  • Dark aisles

Light that falls in pools between fixtures instead of along the aisle.

  • Bare bulbs near hay

Unenclosed lamps where dust and hay can reach them.

  • Glare in the arena

Fixtures placed where horses and riders look straight into them.

  • One switch for the whole barn

Lighting split so you only light the section you're using.

Outside the door

Soffits, entries and the night sky

King's rural roads are dark, and many owners value that. Recessed soffit lights at the front door, the garage and the back patio light the way without lighting up the whole hillside. Warm colour, shielded fixtures and timers or sensors keep it subtle. For the full range, see pot lights and lighting.

Questions

Pot lights and lighting in King: questions

Our great room ceiling is very high. Will pot lights reach the floor?

With the right fixture, yes. Tall ceilings need fixtures with a narrower beam and more output, spaced to suit the height. We often add wall lights or a feature fixture so the room doesn't rely on the ceiling alone.

Can you put pot lights in a vaulted ceiling?

Usually. A vaulted ceiling is often insulated right behind the drywall, so fixtures need to be IC-rated and airtight. Sloped-ceiling trims keep the light pointing down rather than at the wall. We check access before quoting.

What lighting works in a horse barn or riding arena?

Fixtures sealed against dust and moisture, placed to give even light without dark patches or glare in the horses' eyes. In an arena, the height and width of the building set the fixture type and spacing.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Marrast Contracting is a Licensed Electrical Contractor, licence ECRA/ESA 7016430, and every job is led by Shaldin Marrast, a Master Electrician. You can check our licence on the Electrical Safety Authority's contractor lookup at esasafe.com.
