Panel and service upgrades in King City, Nobleton and Schomberg
A large King property can need a bigger service than any city house: a big main home, a pool, chargers and power out to a barn or garage. We size it from a load calculation on the whole property and coordinate the change with Hydro One.
King's three kinds of house
Estates, villages and farms
Panel work in King depends on which part of the township you live in. Estates on the Oak Ridges Moraine are large houses on large lots, often with a separate garage, pool house or barn. The villages of King City, Nobleton and Schomberg mix older homes on established streets with newer subdivisions. And around Kettleby, Pottageville, Laskay and the Holland Marsh, farm properties have their own long list of loads.
Each brings a different upgrade. In a village home, the job is often replacing an older 100 amp or fuse panel. On an estate, it's planning a service big enough for heavy loads that often run at the same time. On a farm, it's making sure the house panel isn't also quietly feeding the barn on an undersized cable.
Load first, then the size
We never pick a panel size by guesswork. The calculation counts heating and cooling, cooking, the pool and spa, water heating, the well pump, chargers and every outbuilding. Then we size the service with room left over, so the panel isn't full the day it's installed.
Choosing the service
200 amps, 400 amps or a second panel
Three common outcomes of a King Township load calculation.
| 200 amp service | Larger service | Sub-panels off the main | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suits | Most village homes and many country houses | Very large estate homes with heavy loads | Homes that need more spaces, not more capacity |
| What changes | Panel, meter base and service entrance | Larger service equipment and often two panels | A second panel fed from the main one |
| Hydro One involvement | Disconnect and reconnect | Planning for the larger supply | Usually none |
| Typical trigger | Fuses, a full panel, a new load | A rebuild, an addition or a pool | A finished basement or a garage |

Panel upgrades in King: questions
How do I know if my King home needs more than 200 amps?
A load calculation tells you. Some very large homes have several heating and cooling systems, heated floors, a pool, a hot tub and two car chargers. Together, those can exceed what a 200 amp service carries. We run the numbers on the house and every building it feeds, then recommend a size. If 200 amps is enough, we'll say so.
Our meter is at the road and the house is set far back. What does an upgrade involve?
Usually a new or larger feeder from the meter location to the house, plus the panel itself. Over that distance the cable has to be sized to keep the voltage up at the house. We confirm the arrangement with Hydro One and arrange locates before any digging.
Our older home in Schomberg still has fuses. Is that common?
It turns up in older homes in many Ontario villages. A fuse panel limits what you can add and is a frequent insurer question. Replacing it with a breaker panel, usually on a 200 amp service, is a common first project for new owners.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It depends on the house. The biggest factor is whether the hydro service to your house is overhead or underground, followed by where the meter and panel sit and how much wiring needs to move. The utility matters too: Toronto Hydro charges a fee for the disconnect and reconnect, which Alectra and Hydro One customers usually don't pay. Send us photos of your panel and meter for a first idea, and we give you a fixed written quote after a site visit.
