Pot lights and lighting plans for Wasaga Beach homes
Cottage ceilings are often low and panelled, and newer homes often come with one fixture per room. We plan pot lights around how each room is used, then install slim LEDs rated for insulated ceilings.
Two kinds of house
Low cottage ceilings and builder-basic lighting
Older Wasaga Beach cottages were rarely built with lighting in mind. Ceilings are often low, sometimes finished in wood panelling or tongue-and-groove boards. One fixture in the middle of the room was the norm, and on a grey winter afternoon that isn't enough.
When a cottage becomes a year-round home, the lighting usually becomes part of the work. Ceilings are opened to add insulation, and that's the right moment to add pot lights. Slim LED fixtures need very little depth, so they suit shallow ceiling spaces.
Homes in the newer subdivisions back from the beach have the opposite problem. Ceilings are drywall and easy to work in, but builders often left a single fixture per room. Open great rooms, kitchens and basements are where owners notice it first.
Room by room
Where pot lights help most in Wasaga Beach homes
Great rooms
Open spaces where one fixture leaves the corners dark, especially in winter.
Kitchens
Light over the counters and island, so you aren't working in your own shadow.
Panelled cottage rooms
Layouts lined up with the boards so the ceiling still looks right.
Finished basements
Even, low-profile light under ductwork and beams.
Sunrooms and enclosed porches
Rooms added to cottages that never had proper lighting.
Outside the house
Soffit lights over entries and the driveway on long winter evenings.
How we plan it
A layout first, then the holes
We start with a drawing. It shows where each light goes, how far apart they sit and which switch or dimmer controls each group. In a panelled ceiling, the layout follows the boards. In a sloped ceiling, we choose fixtures made for the angle.
Then we check the circuits. In an older cottage, the lighting may share a circuit with outlets and heaters, and the wiring itself may need attention. If so, rewiring in Wasaga Beach can be done at the same time. Our main pot lights page explains fixtures and colour temperature.
Every fixture we install in an insulated ceiling is rated for it. Dimmers are matched to the LEDs, so lights don't flicker or hum at low settings.

Questions
Pot lights and lighting in Wasaga Beach: questions
Our cottage has tongue-and-groove wood ceilings. Can pot lights go in?
Usually, yes. We plan the layout so the holes line up neatly with the boards, and we route cable from the attic where there's access. Where there isn't, we discuss surface or track options that leave the wood intact.
We're insulating the cottage for winter. Does that change the lights?
It does. Fixtures in an insulated ceiling must be rated for contact with insulation and should limit air leaks. Slim LED pot lights do both. If you're insulating anyway, it's a good time to add them.
Our newer home has one light in the middle of each room. Where do you start?
With how you use the space. In a kitchen, that means light over the counters. In a great room, it means even light with dimmers. We draw the layout, then you decide which rooms go first.
Is your work guaranteed?
Every job comes with our 1-year workmanship warranty. Products carry their own manufacturer warranties on top of that, and standby generators can be covered by extended manufacturer warranties.
