Electrical service and panel upgrades in Wasaga Beach

When a former cottage becomes a year-round home, the old panel is usually the first thing to run out of room. We size the new service, book Wasaga Distribution and file the ESA permit.

Why the panel runs out of room

Summer wiring, winter loads

A lot of Wasaga Beach homes started life as small cottages. They were built for warm months, a fridge, a few lamps and maybe a window fan. The service from the street was sized for that kind of use.

Today many of those same houses are lived in through January. Electric baseboard heaters line the walls. A heat pump or a larger water heater may have been added, and a deck now holds a hot tub. Each one takes a breaker, and many take two.

The newer subdivisions back from the beach have a different issue. Their services are usually larger, but owners now want a car charger, a basement suite or a standby generator on top of everything else. A load calculation tells us whether the existing service can take that, or whether it needs to grow.

You may already know the signs. Breakers trip when the heat and the dryer run together. There are no empty spaces left. Your insurer has asked about the panel before renewing.

What we check

Signs the service has reached its limit

Any one of these is worth a look before winter.

  • Heat that trips breakers

Baseboard circuits that shut off on the coldest nights, when the load is highest.

  • A full panel

Tandem breakers squeezed in, and no space left for the next circuit.

  • A fuse box or very old panel

Original equipment in a cottage that was never upgraded.

  • Weathered outside equipment

A mast, meter base or service cable worn by wind, snow and sun.

  • New loads on the way

A hot tub, a charger or a generator that the panel can't take on.

  • Questions from an insurer

A request for details about the panel before coverage renews.

How it works

  1. Site visit

We check the meter, the panel, the grounding and every load you want to add.

  2. Written price

Equipment, labour, the ESA permit, the utility booking and travel time as its own line.

  3. Permit and booking

We file with ESA and set the disconnect date with Wasaga Distribution.

  4. Upgrade day

Power off in the morning, new meter base and panel in, circuits moved and labelled.

  5. Reconnect

ESA passes the work, the utility restores power and you get the certificate.

Questions

Panel upgrades in Wasaga Beach: questions

We moved into our Wasaga Beach cottage full time. Will the old service carry winter?

Maybe not. Baseboard heaters draw a lot for hours at a time in cold weather. Add a dryer, a range and a hot tub, and an older service can be pushed past what it was built for. A load calculation answers the question with numbers.

Can the upgrade leave room for a generator and a charger later?

Yes, and it's the cheapest time to plan for them. We choose a panel with spare spaces and note where a transfer switch and a charger circuit would go. That way the next job doesn't mean reworking the panel again.

Who handles Wasaga Distribution?

We do. Once the ESA permit is filed, we arrange the disconnect date with Wasaga Distribution and the reconnect after ESA has passed the work. If your bill names another utility, we book with them instead.

How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?

Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
