Richmond Hill panel and electrical service upgrades
A panel upgrade means something different in each part of Richmond Hill. Near Mill Pond it can mean retiring a fuse box. In Bayview Hill it can mean a bigger service for a rebuild. We plan both with Alectra and ESA.
One town, three kinds of panel
Why the job changes across Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill grew outward from a village on Yonge Street. Around the historic core and Mill Pond, there are older houses and mid-century homes that still run on 60 or 100 amp service, sometimes with fuses. Those panels were sized for a house with one fridge and no air conditioning.
Bayview Hill and South Richvale are home to large houses on big lots, many from the 1980s and 90s. Their panels are usually adequate for the house as built. The upgrade comes when owners renovate in a big way or knock down and rebuild.
To the north, Oak Ridges sits on the moraine around Lake Wilcox. Some homes there draw water from a private well. That makes the well pump one of the circuits that matters most when the panel is changed. Jefferson, Westbrook and Rouge Woods, built in the 1990s and 2000s, mostly need room for new loads rather than a new service.

What a Richmond Hill upgrade usually involves
A general guide. Every house is checked before we quote.
| Village core and Mill Pond | Bayview Hill and South Richvale | Oak Ridges | Jefferson, Westbrook, Rouge Woods | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common starting point | 60 or 100 amps, sometimes fuses | 200 amps, or more on newer rebuilds | Varies with the age of the house | 100 or 200 amp breaker panels |
| Usual reason | Insurance, renovation or an EV | A major renovation or a rebuild | Renovation, generator or EV | No spaces left for new circuits |
| What to plan for | Older wiring found during the move | A service sized from the drawings | Keeping the well pump on its own circuit | A sub-panel may be enough |
Signs
When a Richmond Hill home is ready for one
Fuses or a 60 amp main
Common in the oldest village houses, and a frequent concern for insurers.
A renovation on the drawing board
A new kitchen, an addition or a finished basement will add circuits.
A generator or a charger planned
Both need panel space and capacity, and the transfer switch sits at the panel.
Breakers that trip in summer
Air conditioning and a pool pump running together on a tight service.

Rebuilds in Bayview Hill and South Richvale
A new house in Bayview Hill or South Richvale can carry several heating and cooling systems, heated floors and a pool. Add a home theatre and a garage full of chargers. We size that service from the drawings during design. Alectra's requirements for the new connection are part of the plan from the start.
We work alongside the builder or general contractor, from temporary power while the old house comes down to the final service connection. Read more about our panel upgrades, or see everything we do in Richmond Hill.
Questions
Panel upgrades in Richmond Hill: questions
My older house near Mill Pond still has fuses. Where do we start?
With a site visit. We check the fuse panel, the meter and the wiring we can see, then size the new service from a load calculation. If the house also has early wiring, we'll tell you at the same visit so you can plan both together.
We're on a well in Oak Ridges. Will we have water during the upgrade?
Not while the service is off, because the well pump has no power. Fill a few containers and the bathtub the night before. We restore power as soon as ESA authorizes the connection and Alectra reconnects, and the well pump is one of the first circuits we check.
We're rebuilding in South Richvale. What size service will we need?
It depends on the house you're building, not its square footage alone. Several furnaces, a pool, a generator and EV chargers all add up. We size the service from the drawings and a load calculation, and some large homes need more than 200 amps.
Do you take out the ESA permit?
Yes. In Ontario, the licensed contractor files the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) and books the inspection. We handle it on every job that needs one, and you get the ESA Certificate of Acceptance when the work passes. Keep it: insurers and home buyers often ask for it.
