Home EV charger installation in Brampton
Brampton homes often have several drivers, and sometimes a second unit, on one electrical service. We start with a load calculation, then put a Level 2 charger on its own circuit where the car actually parks.
Brampton driveways
Several drivers, one service
Many Brampton homes have more cars than garage spaces. In Springdale, Fletcher's Meadow and Mount Pleasant, it is common for the garage to hold storage while the cars sit on the driveway. Where there's a basement unit, its tenants may park there too.
That changes where the charger goes. A charger on the front wall of the garage or beside the driveway is a common choice here. It has to be rated for outdoor use and placed so the cable reaches without stretching across a path.
Daily drives on the 410, the 407 or the 401 add up. A Level 2 charger refills most cars overnight, which a standard outlet can't manage after a long commute.
The load check
What decides the install in a Brampton home
The calculation counts everything the service already carries, including a suite if there is one.
| Home | What we usually find | Common outcome |
|---|---|---|
| One household, 200 amps, gas heat | Room for a dedicated circuit | The charger goes straight onto the panel |
| House with a basement unit | Two kitchens and two laundries already on the service | A load management device, or a service upgrade first |
| Older Bramalea home on 100 amps | A full panel with little spare capacity | A panel or service upgrade, sometimes load management |
| Two EVs in one household | Both cars charging overnight | Two chargers sharing one circuit and balancing power |
Garages and outside walls
Running the circuit in Brampton house layouts
In most Brampton two-storeys from the last thirty years, the panel is in the basement and the garage is at the front. The cable usually runs across the basement ceiling and up into the garage. If the basement is finished, especially as a suite, we route around bulkheads and use existing access where we can.
Larger homes in Castlemore and Credit Valley sometimes have double or triple garages. There, wiring for two chargers at once, or roughing in a second circuit for later, often makes sense.
Bramalea's bungalows and semis often have a single garage or only a driveway. An outdoor-rated charger on the side or front wall usually works best. If the panel can't take the load, see panel upgrades in Brampton. For charger types and charging speeds, read our EV chargers page.
Townhouses and condos
Charging where a board decides
Brampton has many townhouse complexes run by condominium corporations, and a growing number of condo buildings. The board controls the exterior walls, the common wiring and the parking. We give them the electrical details they need: the capacity available, the cable route and how your use will be metered.
For everything else we do locally, see our Brampton page.

Charger and upgrade together
If the service needs upgrading, adding the charger circuit on the same day avoids booking Alectra twice.

EV chargers in Brampton: questions
The tenants in our basement unit want to charge too. Can that work?
Often, yes. Their charging uses the same service as yours, so the load calculation counts both units. A charger with load management, or two chargers sharing one circuit, usually fits better than a second full circuit. How the energy cost is split is up to you and your tenants; many chargers can report what each session used.
Can the charger go on the outside of the house instead of in the garage?
Yes. An outdoor-rated charger on the front or side wall suits driveways where the garage isn't used for parking. We place it so the cable reaches the charge port without crossing a walkway, and protect the wiring where it leaves the house.
We have two EVs. Do we need two full circuits?
Not necessarily. Two chargers can share one circuit and balance power between the cars. On a typical commute, both are usually full by morning. On a service that's already busy, that can avoid an upgrade.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. We do a load calculation on your home first. If your panel has room, we install the charger on its own circuit. If it doesn't, the options are a panel or service upgrade, or in some homes a load management device that lets the charger share capacity. We'll tell you which applies.
