Brampton electrical panel and service upgrades
In Brampton, a panel often has to carry two households, not one. We size the service from a full load calculation, arrange the Alectra Utilities disconnect and take the job through ESA inspection.
Why Brampton panels fill up
A house built for one family, now home to more
Most of Brampton's housing went up from the 1990s onward, in Fletcher's Meadow, Sandringham-Wellington, Springdale, Castlemore and Mount Pleasant. Builders sized each service for one household with gas heat. Many of those panels now also feed a basement unit, a second kitchen and a car charger.
Bramalea is a different case. Its bungalows, backsplits and semis date mostly from the 1960s and 70s. Plenty have 100 amp panels, some original and some swapped decades ago, with no spaces left. Downtown, older houses near the Four Corners can still run on small services fed overhead from the street.
In both cases, the size of the house says little. We add up what the household really runs: heating and cooling, cooking in each unit, laundry, water heating and any charger. That load calculation decides whether you need a new panel, a larger service, or neither.
Typical situations
Three common Brampton panel jobs
What we see most often. Every house still gets its own calculation before we quote.
| Situation | Where it's common | What the job usually involves |
|---|---|---|
| Adding a legal second unit | Springdale, Fletcher's Meadow, Mount Pleasant, Sandringham-Wellington | A load calculation for both units, often a larger service and a panel for the suite |
| Full panel in an older home | Bramalea, Heart Lake, downtown streets | A new panel and main breaker, grounding updated and every circuit relabelled |
| Large household, new loads | Castlemore, Credit Valley | Capacity for EV charging, a heat pump or a second kitchen, sometimes beyond 200 amps |

Inspection
ESA reviews the work and authorizes reconnection, Alectra restores power, and the Certificate of Acceptance follows.
Second units
Planning the panel around a basement suite
If you are creating a legal second unit, settle the electrical plan before the drywall goes up. The City of Brampton handles the building permit and registers the unit. ESA inspects the wiring separately, and we file that notification.
The people living in the suite should be able to reach the breakers for their own space without entering the main house. A small panel inside the suite, fed from the main one, is the usual way to do that. Upgrading the service and adding that panel in one job means a single Alectra disconnect.

Questions
Panel upgrades in Brampton: questions
We're adding a basement unit in Springdale. Will 100 amps be enough?
Sometimes, but rarely with much to spare. Two kitchens, two sets of laundry and a second household's habits add up quickly. We count both units together in a load calculation. If gas appliances keep the electrical load modest, the existing service may hold. If not, we price the upgrade before the suite is wired.
Who arranges the power shutoff with Alectra?
We do. When the service has to be disconnected or its size changes, Alectra Utilities removes and restores the supply. We request the appointment and confirm the date with you. Then we plan the changeover to keep the power-off time as short as the work allows.
Our Bramalea semi shares a wall with the neighbour. Is the upgrade more complicated?
Usually not. Each half of a semi-detached house normally has its own meter and panel, so we work on your side only. Your neighbour's power is not affected unless the two supplies share equipment, which we check at the site visit.
How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?
Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
