Pot lights and lighting design in Forest Hill
In a Forest Hill living room, the ceiling is part of the architecture. We place recessed lights around cornices and medallions, layer them with sconces and picture lights, and set scenes you can control.
Rooms with detail
Lighting that respects the ceiling
Formal living and dining rooms in Forest Hill often have high plaster ceilings, cornices, coves and a central medallion. A dense grid of pot lights can flatten a room like that. It lights the floor evenly and leaves the architecture in the dark.
We prefer layers. A few recessed lights set inside the moulded border give general light. Sconces and picture lights bring the walls to life. Switched outlets let table lamps come on from the door, the way many of these rooms were first lit.
Kitchens, family rooms and basements are different. There, a clean pot light layout over counters and seating is usually right, and we plan it around cabinetry and the island.
Layers
Building light in a traditional room
Each layer has its own job, and often its own dimmer.
| Layer | What it does | Where it usually goes |
|---|---|---|
| Recessed lights | Even, general light | Kitchens, family rooms, halls, inside the border of a formal ceiling |
| Wall sconces | Soft light at eye level | Living and dining rooms, stair landings, beside mirrors |
| Picture and accent lights | Light on art and features | Above paintings, in bookcases and niches |
| Cove or cornice LED | Indirect glow from above | Behind a cornice or in a ceiling cove |
| Switched outlets | Lamps on from the door | Living rooms, bedrooms, libraries |
Plaster and height
Cutting old ceilings with care
Before any hole is cut, we find the joists, mark the medallion's edge and check for old wiring in the same bays. Dust sheets go down and furniture is covered. A tall ceiling also needs the right beam angle, so light reaches the room instead of stopping halfway down.
Heavy fixtures need real support. A dining room chandelier or a stairwell lantern should hang from a box rated for its weight, fixed to the framing. Third-floor ceilings under the roof get fixtures rated for insulation contact, sealed against warm, moist air.
Rebuilds and scenes
Lighting control in custom homes
New custom homes in Forest Hill are often planned with lighting scenes from the start: one keypad for dinner, another for the whole floor at night. Those systems need their wiring roughed in while the framing is open. We work from the designer's plan and set each scene with you at handover.
In an older home, smart dimmers give much of the same control without new wiring to every switch. If the ceilings are opening anyway, consider rewiring in Forest Hill at the same time. Garden and facade lighting is covered on our outdoor lighting page, and fixture types on our pot lights page.

Pot lights and lighting in Forest Hill: questions
Can pot lights go into a ceiling with plaster mouldings?
Yes, with a plan. We set the layout inside the moulded border, keep clear of the medallion, and check for joists before cutting. In some formal rooms, a few well-placed lights plus sconces suit the room better than a full grid.
Our dining room chandelier is very heavy. Can the ceiling hold it?
It needs a box and support rated for its weight, fixed to the framing above the plaster. We check what's there now and add proper support where needed before the fixture goes back up.
Can we control lighting scenes from one keypad?
Yes. Smart dimmers and lighting control systems let one keypad set a whole room, or several rooms, to a scene. It's simplest to plan during a renovation, when we can run the wiring each system needs.
Is your work guaranteed?
Every job comes with our 1-year workmanship warranty. Products carry their own manufacturer warranties on top of that, and standby generators can be covered by extended manufacturer warranties.
