Service and panel upgrades for Forest Hill homes
Forest Hill houses are large, and a renovation asks a lot of them. We size the new service from a load calculation on the finished design, gather scattered sub-panels into a clear layout, and book Toronto Hydro and ESA.
Layered panels
When one panel became four
Forest Hill was its own village until 1967, and most of its houses went up between the 1920s and the 1940s. They were built large, in brick and stone, with three floors and a full basement. Their original service was small by today's standards.
Decades of renovation have added to it piece by piece. A sub-panel went in when the third floor became bedrooms. Another arrived with a kitchen addition, and a third may feed the garage. Each one hangs off the main panel, and the labels rarely match the rooms any more.
A service upgrade is the moment to sort that out. We trace every circuit and decide which sub-panels earn their place. You end up with a layout a future electrician, insurer or buyer can read in minutes.
Sizing
200 amps or more
Many Forest Hill homes are well served by 200 amps. Some large houses and rebuilds need more. The load calculation decides, not the size of the old panel.
| 200 amp service | Larger service | |
|---|---|---|
| Usually suits | A large older home with gas heat and one EV | Very large homes, rebuilds, or several big electric loads together |
| Loads that push it up | Central air, an induction range, heated floors | Heat pumps, two EVs, a pool or spa, a coach house |
| Toronto Hydro side | Booked as a standard disconnect and reconnect | Planned with the utility early, and often fed underground |
| Panels | One main panel, sometimes a garage sub-panel | A main panel with planned sub-panels by floor or building |
Outside the house
Meters, old trees and street-facing walls
On many older houses the meter sits in an awkward spot: tucked beside a side door, behind a hedge or low on a stone wall. An upgrade may move it to a location Toronto Hydro accepts and you can live with. On a designated property, visible changes like this may need City heritage approval first.
The tree canopy shapes the job too. An overhead drop may thread through branches, and an underground supply runs past roots. Toronto protects large private trees, so we plan any trench to stay clear of them where we can, and flag it early where we can't.
With Toronto Hydro
How a Forest Hill service upgrade is planned
Walk the house
Every panel, the meter and how the supply reaches the house.
Load calculation
Done on the finished design, including anything planned for the next few years.
Approvals flagged
Any tree or heritage questions raised before dates are booked.
Upgrade day
Toronto Hydro disconnects, we install the service and panels, and every circuit is labelled.
ESA and reconnection
ESA inspects and authorizes the connection, power is restored, and you get the Certificate of Acceptance.
During a renovation
Upgrade the service once
Most Forest Hill upgrades happen inside a bigger project. If walls are opening for a rewire in Forest Hill, size the new service for the finished house. Install it before the new circuits land. That way the utility comes once and nothing is moved twice.
We agree panel locations with your designer and general contractor. That way the main panel isn't left in a future wine room or gym.
Adding a charger?
Count the EV in the calculation
One or two Level 2 chargers belong in the load calculation now, even if the cars come later.

Panel upgrades in Forest Hill: questions
Our house has three sub-panels. Can they be combined?
Often, yes. During the upgrade we trace what each sub-panel feeds and decide which to keep. A panel that serves a distant floor or a garage may stay, fed properly from the new main. The rest can usually be folded into one clearly labelled panel.
Will a larger service mean digging up the garden?
Only if the supply is underground or has to move underground. If digging is needed, we plan the route with you to avoid tree roots, stonework and planting. Large private trees are protected in Toronto, so work close to them can need a City permit first.
Does a heritage designation affect a panel upgrade?
The panel inside doesn't, but visible exterior changes on a designated property may need City heritage approval. A new meter base or service mast is the part to check. Tell us early if your house is designated or listed, so the meter location can be agreed before the utility booking.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It depends on the house. The biggest factor is whether the hydro service to your house is overhead or underground, followed by where the meter and panel sit and how much wiring needs to move. The utility matters too: Toronto Hydro charges a fee for the disconnect and reconnect, which Alectra and Hydro One customers usually don't pay. Send us photos of your panel and meter for a first idea, and we give you a fixed written quote after a site visit.
