Electrical panel and service upgrades in Barrie

Barrie's older homes by the bay and its newer streets to the south outgrow their panels for different reasons. We size the new service, book Alectra Utilities and file the ESA permit for you.

Why Barrie panels fall short

Two parts of the city, two different problems

Close to Kempenfelt Bay, in Allandale, Codrington, the East End and Downtown Barrie, many houses date from the early 1900s to the 1950s. Some still have a fuse box. Others had a breaker panel fitted decades ago that has since been extended with tandem breakers and add-on circuits until no space is left.

Further out, the problem is different. Ardagh, Holly, Painswick and Innis-Shore filled in through the 1990s and 2000s, and plenty of those homes were built with a 100 amp service. That was normal for the time. It is less comfortable now that the same house has central air, a finished basement, a hot tub and perhaps a car to charge.

Barrie's growth adds one more pressure. Many owners are turning the basement into a second unit, and two households on one modest service is where breakers start tripping. A load calculation tells you whether the service can carry both, or whether a 200 amp upgrade should come first.

With Alectra Utilities

How we schedule a Barrie service upgrade

Most of the coordination happens before the crew arrives in Barrie.

  1. Visit and load calculation

We look at the panel, meter and service entrance, and size the new service from what the house will run.

  2. Fixed written price

Equipment, labour, the ESA permit, the Alectra booking and travel time, on one quote.

  3. Permit and utility date

We file the notification of work with ESA and set the disconnect date with Alectra.

  4. The change-over

Supply off in the morning, new meter base and panel installed, each circuit moved across and labelled.

  5. Inspection and power back

ESA inspects, Alectra reconnects, and the Certificate of Acceptance comes to you.

The scope

What a complete Barrie upgrade covers

  1. Load calculationIncluding a basement unit, charger or heat pump you're planning

  3. Meter base and service entranceMast and weatherhead where the drop is overhead
  4. Grounding and bondingChecked and brought up to current rules
  5. Circuit directoryEvery breaker traced and labelled in plain words
  6. ESA permit and inspectionFiled and booked by us, with the certificate at the end

If the panel change is part of a bigger plan, tell us at the first visit. A charger circuit fitted on upgrade day avoids a second trip, so see EV chargers in Barrie. In an older home near the bay, it's also a good moment to check the wiring. See our Barrie wiring page.

Questions

Panel upgrades in Barrie: questions

My Barrie home is on Alectra. Who arranges the disconnect?

We do. Once the permit is filed, we request the disconnect and reconnect from Alectra Utilities and confirm the date with you. On the day, Alectra cuts the supply, we change the service equipment, and power comes back after ESA has accepted the work.

We're adding a basement unit. Will our panel need to change?

Often, yes. A second household brings its own cooking, laundry and heating loads, and a 100 amp service can run out of room quickly. We do a load calculation for both units before anything is drawn, so your designer knows what the City of Barrie application should show.

Does the drive to Barrie make upgrade day longer?

It shouldn't lengthen your time without power. The panel layout is planned before the crew leaves, and the Alectra appointment is set around our arrival. The travel time itself is a line on your written quote, so you see it before you book.

How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?

Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
