Level 2 EV chargers for Barrie homes
If your car does the 400 to Toronto and back, it needs a full battery every morning. We install Level 2 chargers in Barrie garages and driveways, check the panel first and file the ESA permit.
Barrie drivers
Long commutes, cold mornings
A lot of Barrie households drive the 400 into York Region or Toronto every day. That's a long round trip for any car. Electric vehicles also lose range in the cold. A car that warms its battery and cabin while plugged in draws that energy from the house.
Put together, that makes a Level 2 charger close to essential for a Barrie commuter. It runs on a dedicated 240-volt circuit and refills most EVs overnight, so you leave each morning with the range the trip needs.
Where Barrie cars park
Most homes built since the 1990s in Ardagh, Holly, Painswick, Innis-Shore and the south end have an attached garage. The panel is often close by, in the basement below. Those are usually straightforward installs. Near the bay, in Allandale and Codrington, the car more often sits on a driveway or in a detached garage at the back.

How the install changes with where you park
| Where you park | How the circuit gets there | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Attached garage, newer home | A short run from the panel, often through the basement ceiling | Panel capacity, especially with a finished basement |
| Driveway, older home | Out through the wall to an outdoor charger | Weather-rated charger, snow clearance, cable reach |
| Detached garage at the back | Underground across the yard, or a feed to a garage sub-panel | Trench route, lawn restoration, garage lighting and outlets |
| Two EVs in the household | Two circuits, or chargers that share one | Charging speed for each car and the panel's headroom |
The panel
Checking the service before the charger
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest loads a house can have. In a 1990s Barrie home on 100 amps, with central air and a finished basement, there may not be room for it. Add a basement unit and the margin gets thinner again.
We always do a load calculation first. If the panel has space and capacity, the charger gets its own circuit. If capacity is tight, a load management device can let the charger use power only when the house isn't. If neither works, a Barrie panel upgrade comes first, and the charger circuit can go in on the same day.

Questions
EV chargers in Barrie: questions
I drive the 400 every weekday. Is a Level 2 charger worth it?
For a long daily round trip, usually yes. A standard 120-volt outlet adds only a few kilometres of range per hour, which may not cover a Barrie to Toronto commute overnight. A Level 2 charger refills most EVs while you sleep.
Can the charger go outside on the driveway through a Barrie winter?
Yes, if the charger and connections are rated for outdoor use. We mount it where the cable reaches the car easily, above the snowbanks and away from the snowblower's path.
We have a basement tenant. Is there enough power left for a charger?
Sometimes. Two households already put a lot on one service. We do a load calculation that includes the unit, then recommend a dedicated circuit, a load management device or a service upgrade.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. We do a load calculation on your home first. If your panel has room, we install the charger on its own circuit. If it doesn't, the options are a panel or service upgrade, or in some homes a load management device that lets the charger share capacity. We'll tell you which applies.
