Level 2 EV charger installation in Alliston and area
Drives around New Tecumseth and down to the GTA add up, and overnight charging at home covers most of them. We check your panel, plan the cable route and install a Level 2 charger on its own circuit.
Charging in New Tecumseth
Long drives, charged at home
Few trips from here are short. A drive to work, the GTA or the cottage can be a long one, and public chargers are spread thin outside the towns. A Level 2 charger at home refills most batteries overnight, so the car starts each day full.
Where the charger goes depends on the house. Newer homes in Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham usually have an attached garage and a basement panel, which keeps the run short. Rural properties often have a detached garage or a shop some distance from the house. Older homes in town may have no garage at all.
First we check two things. Does the panel have room for a large new circuit, and what is the best route to the parking spot?
By location
Where the charger goes changes the job
| Attached garage | Detached garage or shop | Driveway, no garage | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical setting | Newer subdivisions | Rural lots and some older town homes | Older streets in town |
| Cable route | Short, through the basement or garage wall | Buried or overhead to the building | Along the outside wall |
| Common extra | Load management if the panel is tight | A sub-panel in the building | An outdoor-rated charger |
| What we check | Panel room and wall location | Distance, cable size and grounding | Weather exposure and snow clearing |
Panel capacity
When the panel is already busy
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest loads in a house. On a rural property the panel may already carry a well pump, electric heat and a shop. In a newer subdivision home, a 100 amp service may also run central air and an electric dryer.
A load calculation shows how much room is left. If there isn't enough, there are two routes. A load management device can let the charger share capacity with another big appliance. Or a service upgrade in Alliston can be done first, with the charger circuit added the same day.
No spare spaces
Every breaker slot is used, often with tandem breakers already.
Electric heat or water heater
Large loads that leave little headroom.
A shop or barn on the panel
Outbuilding loads that run at the same time as the car.
Plans for a heat pump
Another big load worth counting before the charger goes in.
Before you buy
Choosing the charger
Most Level 2 chargers work with most cars. What matters for the install is the current the charger draws, whether it's rated for outdoor use, and the length of its cable. If you haven't bought one yet, ask us before you do, so the circuit and the charger match. For more on how home charging works, see our main EV chargers page, or return to our Alliston area page.
Planning a new car
Ask before you order
Tell us the car and where you park. We'll confirm the circuit size and whether the panel can carry it.
Ask about a chargerQuestions
EV chargers in Alliston: questions
Our garage is detached and well back from the house. Can it have a charger?
Yes. The cable is sized for the distance so the voltage at the charger stays where it should be. On a long run, we often recommend a sub-panel in the garage, which also gives you room for lights and outlets. The route, whether buried or overhead, is planned at the site visit.
Our new house in Alliston has a 100 amp panel. Is that enough?
Sometimes. It depends on what else the house runs: central air, an electric dryer, a hot tub or electric water heating. We do a load calculation first. If there's not enough room, the options are a service upgrade or a load management device that shares capacity with the charger.
Can the charger be outside, by the driveway?
Yes, if the charger is rated for outdoor use. We mount it where the cable reaches the car without crossing a walkway, and protect the wiring from snow clearing and vehicles. Many owners in the newer subdivisions choose the garage for convenience, but either works.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. A Level 2 charger needs its own 240-volt circuit, usually 40 to 60 amps. We do a load calculation on your home first. If your panel has room, we install the charger on its own circuit. If it doesn't, the options are a panel or service upgrade, or in some homes a load management device that lets the charger share capacity. We'll tell you which applies.
