Service and panel upgrades around Collingwood and the Blue Mountains
A cottage that now runs electric heat, a hot tub and a car charger all winter needs more than a summer service. We size the upgrade, coordinate with EPCOR or your local utility, and file the ESA permit.
Why shore homes need it
Built for summer weekends, used all winter
Along the south shore of Georgian Bay, a lot of houses started as something smaller. Cottages in Wasaga Beach were built for July and August. Chalets near Blue Mountain were built for ski weekends. Many of them were wired for a light load, with a modest service and a panel to match.
Then their use changed. Owners retired to them, worked from them, or rented them out through the winter. Electric baseboard heat went on every wall, a hot tub went on the deck, and now there's an electric car in the driveway. The panel is the place where all of that meets.
When the service is undersized, the signs are easy to spot. Breakers trip when the heat and the dryer run together. There's no room left for a new circuit. An insurer asks for details about the panel before it will cover the place as a full-time home.
By property
Three common upgrades on the shore
Each one needs a slightly different plan.
| Converted cottage | Ski chalet | Older home downtown | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where | Wasaga Beach and the shoreline | The Blue Mountain area | Downtown Collingwood and nearby streets |
| What fills the panel | Baseboard heat, well or sump pumps | Electric heat, hot tub, heat tracing | Decades of added circuits |
| Outside issues | Exposure to wind and spray off the bay | Roof snow sliding onto the mast or meter | Exterior changes in the heritage district may need Town approval |
| Often paired with | Rewiring the original cottage circuits | A standby generator | Rewiring and a new circuit directory |

How we run an upgrade up north
Collingwood is a longer trip for our crews, so we plan each step to take as few visits as possible.
Photos, then a visit
Your photos tell us what to bring. The site visit confirms the load and the meter location.
One written price
Equipment, labour, the ESA permit, the utility booking and travel time.
Utility and permit
We file with ESA and set the disconnect date with EPCOR or your local utility.
Upgrade day
Supply off in the morning, new meter base and panel in, circuits moved and labelled.
Power restored
ESA accepts the work, the utility reconnects, and the Certificate of Acceptance is yours.

Questions
Panel upgrades in Collingwood: questions
Our Wasaga Beach cottage is now year-round with electric heat. Is 100 amps enough?
It may not be. Baseboard heaters are a large, steady load in January, and a hot tub, a dryer and a charger stack on top. We add it all up in a load calculation and tell you whether the service can carry it or needs to grow.
Snow slides off our chalet roof onto the meter. Can it be moved?
Often, yes. Snow and ice falling from a steep roof can bend a mast or damage a meter base. When we upgrade, we look at moving the meter and service entrance out of the slide path. That goes into the utility request.
Is EPCOR my utility?
If you're in Collingwood or Stayner, almost certainly. Wasaga Beach and some rural properties around The Blue Mountains are on other utilities. The name on your bill tells us who to book the disconnect and reconnect with.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It depends on the house. The biggest factor is whether the hydro service to your house is overhead or underground, followed by where the meter and panel sit and how much wiring needs to move. The utility matters too: Toronto Hydro charges a fee for the disconnect and reconnect, which Alectra and Hydro One customers usually don't pay. Send us photos of your panel and meter for a first idea, and we give you a fixed written quote after a site visit.
