Electrical service upgrades for Caledon homes and farms
On a Caledon property, one service often powers a house, a well pump, a detached garage and sometimes a barn. We size the new panel for all of it, book Hydro One and file the ESA permit.
Rural and suburban Caledon
Two very different panel jobs
Caledon's panel work splits along the same line as the town. In Bolton, Southfields Village and Valleywood, most houses are recent and already have a 200 amp service. The problem there is space: the builder filled the panel, and the owners now want a basement, a charger and a hot tub.
Out on the concession roads it's a different story. A farmhouse near Cheltenham, Alton or Palgrave may still run on 100 amps, or less, with circuits added over generations. That panel might also feed a drive shed, a workshop and the pump that brings up your water. Every one of those loads belongs in the calculation before a new panel is sized.
Why rural loads add up
Country homes carry loads that city houses rarely have. A submersible well pump draws a heavy surge each time it starts. Some homes heat with electric baseboards or a heat pump because there's no natural gas on the road. Add a block heater, a freezer in the garage and a welder in the shop, and an old service runs out of room quickly.
Where your meter sits
How the property is supplied changes the scope
We confirm this at the first visit, because it decides what gets replaced and what Hydro One needs to do.
| Meter on the house | Meter on a pole or pedestal in the yard | |
|---|---|---|
| Common on | Subdivision homes and many country houses | Some farms and properties with several buildings |
| What feeds the buildings | The house panel, with feeders out to any outbuildings | Separate feeders from the meter location to the house and other buildings |
| What we usually replace | Meter base, panel and the service entrance | The house panel and its feeder, plus any yard equipment that needs it |
| Planning note | Overhead or buried supply affects the work at the wall | Long buried runs may need heavier conductors to hold voltage |
Signs
When a Caledon property has outgrown its service
Lights dip when the pump starts
The well pump's starting surge is pulling the voltage down across the house.
No space for an outbuilding feeder
You want power in a new garage or shop, and the panel has no room.
A fuse box in the farmhouse
Original fuses still protect some or all of the circuits.
Electric heat or a heat pump planned
A large new load that the existing service may not carry.
A full builder panel
A newer Bolton home with every breaker space already used.
With Hydro One
How a Caledon upgrade is scheduled
Walk the property
House panel, meter, any yard pole, and every building the service feeds.
Load calculation and quote
Sized for the house, the pump and the outbuildings, with travel time listed.
Permit and utility request
We file with ESA and ask Hydro One for the disconnect and reconnect.
Upgrade day
Service off, new equipment in, every circuit and feeder moved and labelled.
Inspection and power back
ESA inspects, Hydro One reconnects, and the Certificate of Acceptance follows.
What the price covers
Everything from the meter to the last label
- Whole-property load calculationHouse, well pump, outbuildings and anything you plan to add
- New panel and main breakerWith spare spaces for the next project
- Meter base and service entranceReplaced where the existing equipment needs it
- Grounding and bondingChecked and brought up to current requirements
- Feeders reconnectedGarage, shop or barn feeds moved to properly sized breakers
- ESA permit and inspectionFiled and booked by us, with the certificate at the end
Many Caledon owners pair the upgrade with a generator inlet or transfer switch, so the panel is ready for backup power. See backup generators in Caledon, or read the full panel upgrade guide.

Leave room for a charger
If an electric car is in your plans, we size the new panel for it now, so the charger circuit drops straight in later.

Panel upgrades in Caledon: questions
Our farmhouse panel also feeds the barn. Does the barn have to be redone too?
Not always. We trace the barn feeder back to the panel and check its size, its condition and how it's protected. If it's sound, it moves to a breaker in the new panel. If it's undersized or damaged, we price a new feeder as a separate line so you can decide.
Our Bolton house is only a few years old. Why is the panel already full?
Builders usually install enough breakers for the house as sold. A finished basement, a hot tub, a car charger and a garage heater each need their own circuit, and spaces run out fast. Sometimes a sub-panel solves it. If the load calculation shows the service itself is too small, an upgrade is the better answer.
Will the well pump be off for the whole upgrade?
Yes, while Hydro One has the service disconnected, the pump can't run, so there's no running water. Fill a few jugs and the bathtub the night before. We restore the pump circuit early in the reconnection so water comes back with the power.
How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?
Usually most of one working day. The utility disconnects the service in the morning, we swap the panel and service equipment, and power is reconnected once the work is ready. We book the utility appointment for you and tell you the date in advance.
